Baseball, National League Rules

Baseball, National League Rules is a Seven Card Stud game with a baseball theme. Nines are wild, a player dealt a seven face up gets an extra face-up card (the seventh-inning stretch), and a player dealt a three face up is out of the hand (three strikes). The best five-card hand wins.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

This version of Baseball was contributed to pagat.com by John Noriega. The name 'National League Rules' separates it from the standard game, in which threes and nines are wild and a four earns an extra card.

1.2

The game uses a standard 52-card deck. It is dealt and bet as in Seven Card Stud: two cards down, four up and one down, with five betting rounds.

1.3

All nines are wild. Five of a kind is possible and ranks above a straight flush. See hand rankings.

1.4

The source names only nines as wild. It gives threes dealt face down no special effect.

1.5

Extra cards for sevens mean more cards are used than in standard stud. With a full table the deck may run short. The usual Baseball practice, if it does, is to deal the last card as a single face-up community card for everyone.

2.1

Each betting round is begun by the player with the highest hand showing, as in Seven Card Stud.

Article 3Sevens and threes

3.1

Seventh-inning stretch. A player who is dealt a seven face up receives one extra card face up. The extra cards for a round are dealt after every player has received their regular card for that round.

3.2

Three strikes. A player who is dealt a three face up is out of the hand at once. Their cards are dead and they lose what they have already put in the pot.

3.3

The source does not say whether an extra card dealt for a seven has the same effects if it is itself a seven or a three. The dealer shall announce this before the deal.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

Each remaining player makes the best five-card hand from all their cards, including any extra cards. The highest hand wins the whole pot.

Example

Five kings with two wild nines

Player A is dealt 9♣K♦ down and K♠ up. A later gets 7♥ face up and so receives an extra card, the Q♣. A's other up cards are K♥2♦, and the last card, dealt down, is the 9♥.

A has eight cards. The three natural kings and the two wild nines make five kings, which beats any straight flush.

Example

Struck out

Player B has A♠A♦ down and is dealt the 3♣ face up on fourth street. B is out of the hand, even though the pair of aces was strong.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

What is wild in National League Baseball poker?

Nines. Unlike standard Baseball, threes are not wild: a three dealt face up knocks you out of the hand.

What happens if you get a seven face up?

You are dealt one extra face-up card, after everyone has received their card for that round.

Can you make five of a kind?

Yes. With nines wild, five of a kind is possible and beats a straight flush.
