Baseball Poker Rules

Baseball is a home version of seven-card stud in which all threes and nines are wild, and a player dealt a four face up immediately receives an extra upcard. It is dealt and bet like ordinary stud, and the best five-card hand wins, so hands of five of a kind are common.

Article 1Players, deck and wild cards

1.1

Baseball is played with a standard 52-card deck without jokers. It is a variant of seven-card stud, and the rules of that game apply except as stated on this page.

1.2

No more than six players should take part, because extra cards dealt for fours can exhaust the deck.

1.3

All threes and nines are wild, whether dealt face up or face down. A wild card may stand for any card the player does not already hold, or may be used as an additional card of a rank the player holds to make five of a kind.

1.4

Five of a kind is the highest hand and ranks above a straight flush. Otherwise hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.5

The object is to hold the best five-card hand at showdown, chosen from all the cards a player has been dealt, or to be the last player remaining after the others fold.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

Each player places an agreed ante in the pot before the deal.

2.2

The cards are dealt as in seven-card stud: two cards face down and one face up to each player, then three further upcards one at a time, then a final card face down. There is a betting round after each stage of the deal.

StageCards dealt to each playerBetting round

Fourth streetOne upSecond
Fifth streetOne upThird
Sixth streetOne upFourth
Seventh streetOne downFifth and last
2.3

Each betting round is begun by the player whose upcards form the best hand showing at that time. Some groups instead use a forced bring-in on the first round, as in standard stud; the dealer shall announce which method applies.

2.4

If the deck runs out before the deal is complete, the usual stud practice applies: the dealer turns up one card in the centre of the table as a community card shared by all remaining players.

Article 3Fours and threes

The two special ranks are what make Baseball different from ordinary wild-card stud.

3.1

A player who is dealt a four face up is immediately dealt an extra card face up, before the next player receives a card. The extra card is dealt even if it is itself a four, in which case the player receives another. A player may therefore hold eight or more cards at showdown.

3.2

Groups differ on what happens to a four dealt face down. It may earn an extra card when the player chooses to reveal it, or no extra card at all. The dealer shall announce the rule before the deal.

3.3

Many groups play that a player dealt a three face up must immediately either pay an amount equal to the pot or fold. Others require a smaller fixed payment instead of matching the pot. Threes dealt face down carry no penalty. Where no such rule is announced, a face-up three is simply wild.

3.4

Some groups require a player to pay a fixed amount for the extra card given for a face-up four. The dealer shall announce the amount before the deal.

Example

Five of a kind beats four of a kind

Player A finishes with 3♥9♣K♦K♠7♣2♦5♥. The two wild cards join the two kings to make four kings.

Player B was dealt a four face up and so holds eight cards: 3♠3♦Q♥Q♣Q♠8♦4♣J♥. The two wild threes join three natural queens to make five queens.

Five of a kind ranks above four of a kind, so Player B wins the pot.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

After the final betting round, the remaining players show their hands. Each player makes the best five-card hand from all the cards they hold, using wild cards as they choose.

4.2

The best hand wins the whole pot. Identical hands split the pot equally.

4.3

Wild cards do not break ties. A hand that uses wild cards ranks the same as the same hand made from natural cards, unless the group has agreed otherwise before the deal.

Article 5Common variations

  • Midnight Baseball: all seven cards are dealt face down, and players turn them up one at a time without looking, as in No Peek.
  • Woolworth: fives and tens are wild instead of threes and nines.
  • Football: threes and sixes are wild, and the extra card is given for a two instead of a four.
  • Baseball, National League Rules and other named versions change which cards are wild or what the special cards cost.
  • Some published descriptions use the name for a nine-card game dealt face down, in which each four costs the player an ante and earns an extra card. Agree which version is being played before the deal.

Article 6Strategy notes

  • With eight wild cards and extra cards for fours, winning hands are much stronger than in ordinary stud. Four of a kind is often not enough.
  • Count the wild cards and fours already showing. Each one visible on the table is one fewer that can still reach you.
  • Where the pay-or-fold rule for threes is in force, a face-up three late in a big pot can be very expensive, so weigh it before calling earlier bets.

Article 7Frequently asked questions

What cards are wild in Baseball poker?

All threes and nines are wild, whether they are dealt face up or face down. Fours are not wild, but a four dealt face up earns the player an extra upcard.

What happens if you get a three face up in Baseball?

In the basic game it is simply a wild card. Many groups add a rule that a player dealt a three face up must match the pot or fold, or pay a fixed amount. The dealer announces which rule applies before dealing.

Can you have five of a kind in Baseball?

Yes. A wild card can be added to four cards of the same rank, or several wild cards combined with fewer natural cards. Five of a kind is the highest hand, above a straight flush.

How many players can play Baseball poker?

Up to six. With more players the extra cards dealt for fours can run the deck out.
