Binglao Rules

Binglao is pot-limit Omaha in which the player on the button rolls a six-sided die before every deal. The roll decides whether each player gets four, five or six hole cards, and whether the hand is played for high only or high-low eight-or-better. Otherwise the hand is dealt and played as Omaha, using exactly two hole cards and three community cards.

Article 1Objective and equipment

1.1

Binglao is a variant of pot-limit Omaha (PLO). It has been played at the Norwegian Poker Championship festival held in Dublin, Ireland, where it is often listed as Binglao 6 Max.

1.2

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck with no jokers and no wild cards, and one standard six-sided die. High hands are ranked according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

Tables are usually limited to six players. Seven players could in fact be dealt six cards each without the deck running out, but the 6-max format is the one normally used.

Article 2The die roll

The die roll is the only feature that distinguishes Binglao from ordinary Omaha.

2.1

Before each deal, the player holding the dealer button shall roll the die. The result applies to that hand only.

2.2

The result sets the number of hole cards and the game type as follows:

Die rollHole cards eachGame
14Pot-limit Omaha high-low eight-or-better
25Pot-limit Omaha high-low eight-or-better
36Pot-limit Omaha high-low eight-or-better
44Pot-limit Omaha high only
55Pot-limit Omaha high only
66Pot-limit Omaha high only
2.3

In short, a roll of 3 or less means high-low and a roll of 4 or more means high only. Within each half, the lowest roll gives four cards, the middle roll five and the highest roll six.

Article 3The blinds and the deal

3.1

The button, blinds and order of action are the same as in Omaha. The player to the left of the button posts the small blind and the next player to the left posts the big blind.

3.2

After the die is rolled, the dealer deals the number of hole cards shown in the table in Rule 2.2 to each player, one at a time, face down and clockwise, starting with the small blind.

Article 4Betting rounds

Flop3 community cardsFirst active player to the left of the button
Turn1 community cardFirst active player to the left of the button

4.1

All betting is pot-limit: no bet or raise may exceed the size of the pot, counting the amount needed to call. See betting structures.

4.2

A card is burned before the flop, the turn and the river.

Article 5Making a hand and the showdown

5.1

Whatever the number of hole cards, each hand shall be made from exactly two hole cards and exactly three community cards.

5.2

In a high-only hand (die roll 4, 5 or 6), the best high hand wins the pot.

5.3

In a high-low hand (die roll 1, 2 or 3), the pot is split equally between the best high hand and the best qualifying low, as in Omaha Hi-Lo.

5.3(a) A qualifying low has five cards of different ranks, none higher than an eight. Aces count low, and straights and flushes do not count against a low.

5.3(b) A player may use different hole cards and community cards for high and for low.

5.3(c) If no player has a qualifying low, the best high hand wins the whole pot.

5.4

The order of showing, the cards-speak rule and the division of odd chips follow the usual Omaha procedures.

Example

A roll of 1: four cards, high-low

The button rolls a 1, so each player gets four hole cards and the pot will be split high-low. Board: 7♠5♦2♣K♣9♥

Player A holds A♥3♠K♦Q♠. For low, A uses A♥3♠ with 7♠5♦2♣ for 7-5-3-2-A. For high, A's best is a pair of kings, using K♦A♥ with K♣9♥7♠.

Player B holds 9♦9♠4♥6♥. For high, B uses 9♦9♠ with 9♥K♣7♠ for three nines. For low, B uses 4♥6♥ with 7♠5♦2♣ for 7-6-5-4-2.

B's three nines win the high half. Both lows start with a seven, and A's second card (5) is lower than B's (6), so A wins the low half.

Example

A roll of 6: six cards, high only

The button rolls a 6, so each player gets six hole cards and the whole pot goes to the best high hand. Board: 8♥6♥3♥Q♣2♠

Player A holds A♠A♦A♣5♦4♦7♣. A cannot use three aces, since only two hole cards may play. A's best hand is a straight, 5♦4♦ with 6♥3♥2♠, six high. (7♣5♦ with 8♥6♥ would need a four on the board.)

Player B holds K♥9♥J♠J♦10♣4♠. B uses K♥9♥ with 8♥6♥3♥ for a king-high flush, which beats A's straight.
