Article 1Players, deck and wild cards

1.1

Double-Edge Trim-Saw, also known as Texas Trim, was contributed to pagat.com by Chris Odell. It follows the rules of no-limit Texas Hold'em except as stated here.

1.2

The game uses a standard 52-card deck. All four deuces are wild.

1.3

Five of a kind is possible and, by the usual convention, ranks above a straight flush. See hand rankings.

1.4

Where two hands are otherwise equal, a hand made without wild cards beats the same hand made with them. The contributor describes a natural hand as the one thing that usually beats a pair of wild deuces in the hole.

Article 2The deal and the two sets

2.1

Blinds and the dealer button are as in Texas Hold'em. Each player is dealt two sets of two hole cards, four cards in all, kept as two separate pairs.

2.2

A player shall keep the two sets apart throughout the hand. Cards may not be moved from one set to the other, and a player shall not pick up both sets at the same time.

2.3

A player does not declare which set they are betting on.

Article 3Betting and the board

3.1

The flop, turn and river are dealt as in Texas Hold'em, with the usual four betting rounds.

3.2

Betting is no-limit, as described in betting structures.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

At showdown each player makes the best five-card hand from the five community cards and either one of their sets of hole cards. Cards from both sets shall not be combined.

4.2

The best hand wins the pot. Identical hands split the pot, subject to 1.4.

Example

Picking the stronger set

Board: K♥9♥2♦7♣4♥

A player's first set is A♥6♠. With the three hearts on the board and the wild 2♦, it makes an ace-high flush.

The second set is K♠K♦. With the K♥ on the board and the wild deuce, it makes four kings.

Four of a kind beats a flush, so the player shows the second set. Taking the ace from the first set and a king from the second is not allowed.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • With four deuces wild and four hole cards per player, strong hands are common. Hand values are much higher than in standard Hold'em.
  • A pair of deuces in one set is the strongest starting holding, since both cards are wild.
  • The second set gives a second chance on every board, so a player with one weak set can still hold a strong hand.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

Can you mix your two hands in Double-Edge Trim-Saw?

All four deuces, whether in the hole or on the board.

Does a natural hand beat a wild hand in Double-Edge Trim-Saw?

Yes. When two hands are otherwise identical, the one made without wild cards wins.
