Hearts Poker Rules

Hearts Poker borrows ideas from the card game Hearts. Players pass cards left and right, keep two, and then play them with three community cards, or six if two or more hearts appear. At the showdown, the queen of spades in a player's hand costs them a card and the jack of diamonds earns them one.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Hearts Poker was contributed to pagat.com by Jack Namazukage. It uses a standard 52-card deck and no wild cards.

1.2

Each player ends with two hand cards, and there are three or six community cards. The best five-card hand made from a player's own cards and the community cards wins the pot.

1.3

The queen of spades and the jack of diamonds have special effects when held in a player's hand at the showdown (5.2 and 5.3). They have no effect as community cards.

Article 2The deal and the passes

2.1

Each player is dealt two cards face down and one card face up. The first betting round follows.

2.2

First pass. All players at the same time pass one of their face-down cards to the player on their left. The second betting round follows.

2.3

Each player is dealt a fourth card, face up.

2.4

Second pass. All players at the same time pass one of their face-up cards to the player on their right. The third betting round follows.

2.5

The source does not say who opens each betting round. The dealer shall announce the order before the deal.

Article 3The discard

3.1

Each player now has two cards face down and two face up. Each player discards two cards: either both face-up cards or both face-down cards, not one of each.

3.2

A player who discards the face-down cards picks up the face-up cards and keeps them concealed for the rest of the hand. Every player therefore ends with two concealed hand cards.

Article 4Community cards and betting

  1. The dealer shuffles the discards and turns one of them face up as a community card.
  2. The dealer turns two more community cards face up from the undealt deck. There are now three community cards.
  3. The fourth betting round follows.
  4. If two or more of the three community cards are hearts, the dealer turns up three more cards from the undealt deck, making six, and a fifth betting round follows.
  5. If fewer than two are hearts, there are no more cards and no fifth round.
RoundWhen it happens
1stAfter two down cards and one up card
2ndAfter the pass to the left
3rdAfter the fourth card and the pass to the right
4thAfter the discard and three community cards
5thOnly if two or more of the first three community cards are hearts, after three more community cards

Article 5Showdown

5.1

The remaining players show their two hand cards.

5.2

Queen of spades. A player holding the queen of spades as a hand card must discard the higher-ranking of their two hand cards. If the player holds a pair of queens, the queen of spades is discarded.

5.3

Jack of diamonds. A player holding the jack of diamonds as a hand card is dealt one extra card.

5.4

Each player makes the best five-card hand from their own cards and the three or six community cards. The highest hand wins the pot.

5.5

A player left with only four cards, one hand card and three community cards, competes with those four. Such a player cannot make any hand that needs five cards, such as a straight, flush, full house or straight flush.

Example

Six community cards

The first three community cards are 7♥2♥K♣. Two are hearts, so three more are dealt: 9♥Q♦4♠.

Player A holds A♥5♥ and makes an ace-high flush: A♥9♥7♥5♥2♥.

Player B holds K♦K♠ and makes three kings with the K♣. The flush beats three of a kind, so A wins.

Example

The queen of spades costs a card

Player C holds Q♠A♦. The ace is the higher card, so C must discard the A♦ and play with the Q♠ and the community cards.
