Hollywood Hold'em Rules

Hollywood Hold'em is Texas Hold'em with one extra step: after the flop betting, each player may pay a fixed fee to swap both hole cards for two new ones. If anyone swaps, there is an extra betting round before the turn. It was devised by Brian J. Cavanaugh, as published on pagat.com.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Hollywood Hold'em was devised by Brian J. Cavanaugh, as published on pagat.com. It follows the rules of Texas Hold'em except as stated here.

1.2

Three to eleven players may take part, using a standard 52-card deck with no wild cards. The best five-card high hand, made from two hole cards and five community cards, wins the pot.

1.3

The inventor's aim was to keep players with weak hands in the pot for longer, and to build the pot through exchange fees.

Article 2The deal

2.1

The source does not specify forced bets. Blinds as in Texas Hold'em, or an ante, are the usual practice; the dealer shall announce which before the deal.

2.2

Each player is dealt two cards face down, and five community cards are dealt face down to the table.

2.3

The exchange fee is fixed before the deal. It may follow the house's betting limits. The inventor recommends keeping it modest so that players are encouraged to exchange.

Article 3Play, the exchange and betting

RoundBefore the round
1The deal
2Three community cards turned face up (the flop)
Exchange roundHeld only if at least one player exchanges
3The fourth community card turned (the turn)
4The fifth community card turned (the river)
3.1

After the first betting round, three of the community cards are turned face up and there is a second betting round.

3.2

Then each player in turn either keeps both hole cards or discards both and receives two new cards from the dealer. A player shall exchange both cards or neither.

3.3

A player who exchanges shall pay the fixed fee into the pot.

3.4

If at least one player exchanges, there is a betting round. If no one exchanges, there is no extra round and play continues.

3.5

The fourth community card is turned, followed by a betting round, then the fifth, followed by the final betting round and the showdown.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

Players remaining after the final betting round show their hands. As in Texas Hold'em, each player makes the best five-card hand from their two hole cards and the five community cards, and the best hand wins.

Example

An exchange pays off

A player holds 7♣2♦. The flop is A♠K♦9♥.

The player pays the fee and exchanges both cards, receiving Q♣J♥.

The turn is 10♠ and the river 3♣. The player's best hand is A♠K♦Q♣J♥10♠, an ace-high straight.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • A weak starting hand is less hopeless than in Hold'em, since it can be replaced after the flop for the fee.
  • The flop is known before the exchange, so a player can judge whether two random new cards are likely to beat what they hold.
  • An exchange tells the table that the player's original hand missed the flop.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

Can you exchange just one card in Hollywood Hold'em?

No. You must exchange both hole cards or keep both.

How much does it cost to exchange in Hollywood Hold'em?

A fixed fee set before the deal, often in line with the house's betting limits. The inventor suggests keeping it reasonable so players are tempted to use it.

Is there always a betting round after the exchange?

Only if at least one player exchanges. If everyone keeps their cards, play goes straight on to the turn.
