Irish Poker Rules

Irish is a Hold'em variant in which each player is dealt four hole cards instead of two. Players keep all four through the pre-flop and flop betting, then discard two before the turn, and the rest of the hand is played exactly like Texas Hold'em.

Article 1Objective and equipment

1.1

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck with no jokers. Hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.2

The object is to win the pot, either with the best five-card hand at showdown or by making a bet that no one calls.

1.3

Irish follows Texas Hold'em in every respect except the number of hole cards and the discard described in article 4. It is similar to Crazy Pineapple, which starts with three hole cards instead of four.

1.4

Up to ten players may take part; with four hole cards each, a full deck serves ten players with ample cards to spare.

Article 2Blinds and the deal

2.1

The dealer button, small blind and big blind are used exactly as in Texas Hold'em.

2.2

The dealer deals four cards face down to each player, one at a time, starting with the small blind.

2.3

Community cards are dealt as in Hold'em: a burn card and three-card flop, a burn card and the turn, a burn card and the river.

Article 3Betting rounds

RoundWhen it happensHole cards held
Pre-flopAfter the four hole cards are dealt4
FlopAfter the first three community cards4
DiscardAfter the flop betting and before the turn; no betting2
TurnAfter the fourth community card2
RiverAfter the fifth community card2
3.1

The order of action on every round, the minimum bet and the rules for raising are the same as in Texas Hold'em.

3.2

The game may be played no-limit, pot-limit or fixed-limit. See betting structures.

Article 4The discard

4.1

When the flop betting is complete and before the turn card is dealt, each active player shall discard two of their four hole cards face down, keeping two.

4.2

Discarded cards are dead and take no further part in the hand. They shall not be shown to other players.

4.3

Players may keep any two of their four cards. The choice is normally made after seeing the flop, which is what makes the game different from Hold'em.

4.4

The discard is compulsory. By the usual ruling in discard games, a hand that reaches the showdown with more than two hole cards is dead.

Example

Choosing what to keep

A player holds A♥K♥7♣7♦. The flop is K♠7♠2♥.

Keeping 7♣7♦ gives three sevens. Keeping A♥K♥ gives a pair of kings with an ace kicker. Keeping K♥7♣ gives two pair. Three of a kind is the strongest, so the player keeps the sevens and discards the ace and king.

Article 5Showdown

5.1

After the river betting, the remaining players show their two hole cards. Each player's hand is the best five cards from their two hole cards and the five community cards, using both, one or neither hole card, as in Hold'em.

5.2

Showdown order, ties, split pots and side pots follow the rules of Texas Hold'em.

Example

A discard that paid off

Final board: Q♦8♠5♦2♣J♦.

Player A kept A♦4♦ from A♦4♦9♣9♥ after the flop, giving up a pair of nines to draw at a flush. The river brought the third diamond, so A has an ace-high diamond flush.

Player B kept Q♠J♠ and has two pair, queens and jacks. The flush beats two pair, so Player A wins.

Article 6Variations and related games

  • Home games sometimes move the discard to a different point in the hand. If so, the dealer shall announce it before the deal.
  • Pineapple and Crazy Pineapple: three hole cards, one discarded.
  • Tahoe: three hole cards, none discarded, with at most two used.
  • Omaha: four hole cards kept to the end, exactly two used.

Article 7Frequently asked questions

When do you discard in Irish poker?

After the betting on the flop is finished and before the turn is dealt. Each player throws away two of their four hole cards.

How many hole cards do you use in Irish poker?

After the discard you have two, and you use them as in Texas Hold'em: both, one or neither, with the five community cards.

What is the difference between Irish and Omaha?

Both start with four hole cards. In Omaha you keep all four and must use exactly two. In Irish you discard two before the turn and then play like Hold'em.

Is Irish the same as Crazy Pineapple?

They are similar. In Crazy Pineapple you get three hole cards and discard one after the flop; in Irish you get four and discard two.
