Monterey Poker Rules

Monterey Poker is seven-card stud with a personal wild card. Each player's seventh card is dealt face down and is wild, and every other card in that player's hand of the same rank is wild too. Players roll up one of their first three cards, and the best five-card hand wins.

Article 1Players, deck and wild cards

1.1

Monterey Poker is played by four to seven players with a standard 52-card deck. It is a variant of Seven Card Stud.

1.2

Each player's seventh card is dealt face down and is wild for that player only. Every other card in the same player's hand, face up or face down, of the same rank as the seventh card is also wild.

1.3

Wild cards are not known until the last card, so every player has at least one wild card at showdown. Five of a kind is possible. Unless the dealer announces otherwise, five of a kind is the highest hand, above a straight flush. See hand rankings.

Article 2Antes, the deal and the streets

2.1

Each player antes. The dealer then deals three cards face down to each player.

2.2

After the first betting round, each player chooses one of their three down cards and turns it face up.

2.3

The streets and betting rounds are as follows:

StageCardsFirst to bet
Three downThree cards face down to each playerNot specified; announced by the dealer
Roll one upEach player turns one of the three face upThe highest face-up card
Fourth cardOne card face upThe best face-up hand
Fifth cardOne card face upThe best face-up hand
Sixth cardOne card face upThe best face-up hand
Seventh cardOne card face down, wildThe best face-up hand
2.4

After the seventh card, each player holds two concealed cards from the first three, four face-up cards and the wild seventh card.

2.5

The source does not name the first bettor on the opening round. The dealer shall announce it before the deal. Betting on this round is often light, since no wild cards are yet known.

Article 3Showdown

3.1

After the final betting round, each remaining player makes the best five-card hand from their seven cards, using their wild cards as they choose. The best hand wins the pot.

3.2

Under the source's convention, the hand a player declares at showdown is the hand they play, even if they hold something better. Many home games instead apply the rule that the cards speak. The dealer shall announce which applies.

Example

A pair of twos in the hole

A player's cards are: concealed 9♥2♦, rolled up 9♣, face up K♠9♠5♣ and, last, face down 2♠.

The seventh card is a two, so it is wild, and the two of diamonds in the hole is wild as well. With three natural nines and two wild cards, the player has five nines.

Example

A lone wild card

A player's cards are: concealed J♥8♣, rolled up J♦, face up Q♥10♥4♠ and, last, face down 7♦.

Only the seventh card, the seven, is wild. Used as a nine, it completes the queen-high straight Q-J-T-9-8. Used as a jack, it would make only three jacks, so the straight is the better choice.

Article 4Common variations

The source describes no formal variations. Groups that play Monterey sometimes adapt features from other stud games, such as a high-low split. Any change shall be announced before the deal. Similar games include:

Article 5Strategy notes

  • Because every player gets a wild card, a hand below a full house rarely wins. Straight flushes and five of a kind are common winners.
  • A concealed pair is valuable: if the seventh card matches it, it gives two or three extra wild cards that opponents cannot see.
  • The biggest bets usually come on the last round, once each player knows their wild cards.
