No Holds Barred Poker Rules

In No Holds Barred, each player gets four hole cards and eight community cards are laid out as a square with four wild corners. The cards are turned one at a time, with a betting round after each. Each player's hand is exactly two hole cards plus one side of the square, three cards in a line.

Article 1Players, deck, layout and wild cards

1.1

No Holds Barred is played by five to seven players with a standard 52-card deck.

1.2

After the antes, the dealer deals four cards face down to each player, then eight community cards face down in the centre of the table, arranged as the outline of a square: three cards along each side, with the four corner cards shared by two sides and the centre left empty.

1.3

The square has four rows: the top, the bottom, the left side and the right side. Each row is three cards in a line and contains two corner cards and one middle card.

1.4

The four corner cards are wild.

1.5

Because every row contains two corners, every player's final hand includes two wild cards. Five of a kind is possible, and the usual practice is that it ranks above a straight flush. See hand rankings.

Article 2Turning the cards and betting

2.1

After the deal, the first betting round begins with the player to the dealer's left.

2.2

The dealer then turns the community cards face up one at a time, choosing among them at random, with a betting round after each card. The four middle cards are turned first; the four corner cards shall be the last four cards turned.

2.3

The source states that each later betting round is opened by the player with the highest-ranking card. As all players' cards are concealed, the dealer shall announce before the deal how the first bettor on these rounds is decided.

2.4

When every card is face up and the last betting round is complete, the showdown follows.

Article 3Making a hand and the showdown

3.1

Each player's hand shall be made from exactly two of their four hole cards and all three cards of one row of the square.

3.2

Cards may not be mixed between rows. The three board cards must lie in a single line along one side of the square.

3.3

The best five-card hand wins the pot.

Example

Five of a kind from one row

Top row: 4♣Q♠9♦, with the four and nine as wild corners.

A player holds Q♥Q♦7♠2♣. Using the two queens with the top row, the player has three natural queens and two wild cards: five queens.

Example

Choosing the best row

Left row: 4♣6♥K♦, where the four and king are corners. Right row: 9♦10♠3♥, where the nine and three are corners.

A player holds J♠K♠8♥8♣. With the right row, the jack and king from the hand, the natural ten and two wild corners make an ace-high straight flush in spades: A-K-Q-J-T. With the left row, the pair of eights, the six and two wilds make only four eights. The player uses the right row.

Article 4Common variations

4.1

Row by row. To speed the game up, the dealer may turn over a complete row at a time instead of single cards. There is then an initial betting round and one betting round per row: five in all.

The rule that a hand must use a line of connected board cards is shared with Elevator and Iron Cross.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • Every hand includes two wild cards, so very strong hands are normal. Four of a kind is often not enough to win.
  • A pair in the hole is valuable, since a matching middle card with two wild corners makes five of a kind.
  • Two suited, connected hole cards can make a straight flush with the help of the wild corners.
