Poker Dice Rules

Poker dice is played with five dice whose faces show an ace, king, queen, jack, ten and nine. Each player rolls up to three times, setting aside any dice they want to keep between rolls, to make the best poker hand. There are no suits, so flushes are impossible, and five of a kind is the top hand.

Article 1Players, dice and objective

1.1

The game is played by two or more players, usually no more than five, with five six-sided poker dice.

1.2

Each die has six faces: ace, king, queen, jack, ten and nine. The ace is the highest face and the nine the lowest.

1.3

The faces are often printed to look like playing cards, commonly with the ace of spades. Kings, queens and jacks are usually distinguished by colour rather than suit. The suits have no meaning in play.

1.4

The object is to roll the best poker hand. Players usually put an agreed stake into a pot before play, and the best hand takes it.

Article 2The rolls

2.1

Players take turns. On a turn, the player rolls all five dice.

2.2

The player may then set aside any number of dice to keep and roll the rest again. The player may do this a second time, for a total of up to three rolls. The player may stop after the first or second roll.

2.3

Whether dice set aside after one roll may be picked up and rolled again later varies. Players shall agree the rule before play.

2.4

The hand is the five dice showing after the player's last roll.

Article 3Hand rankings

Hands rank as in ordinary poker, without flushes. The chance shown is for a single roll of five dice.

7One pair10♦10♦A♠Q♥9♣3,600 in 7,776
8No pair (bust)A♠K♥Q♥J♥9♣480 in 7,776
3.1

Only two straights are possible: the high straight, A-K-Q-J-10, and the low straight, K-Q-J-10-9. The high straight beats the low one.

3.2

Hands of the same rank are compared as in poker: higher sets first, then the remaining dice. See hand rankings.

3.3

Straights are rarer than full houses in poker dice, but the usual practice is still to rank them below the full house, as in card poker. In older versions, straights did not count at all and were treated as busts. Players shall agree which rule applies before play.

Article 4Winning and ties

4.1

When every player has had a turn, the best hand wins.

4.2

The handling of exactly tied hands is not fixed. The usual practice is for the tied players to roll off or to split the stake; players shall agree which before play.

Example

Two pair against three of a kind

The dice are shown as card faces. Player A's first roll is A♠A♠K♥9♣10♦. A keeps the two aces and rolls three dice, getting 9♣9♣Q♥, then keeps the nines too and rolls the last die: J♥. A's hand is two pair, aces and nines, with a jack.

Player B finishes with Q♥Q♥Q♥K♥10♦, three queens. Three of a kind beats two pair, so B wins.

Article 5Common variations

  • Two rolls only, instead of three.
  • Re-rolling limited to three dice at a time.
  • Straights counted as no pair, as in older rules.
  • A two-player bluffing game in the manner of liar's dice, played with poker dice.
  • Sets of twelve-sided dice have been made that represent all 52 playing cards, allowing flushes.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

Does a straight beat a full house in poker dice?

Usually not. Most players rank a straight below a full house, as in card poker, even though a straight is rarer with dice. Agree the rule before you play; some older versions do not count straights at all.

How many rolls do you get in poker dice?

Up to three. After each of the first two rolls you can keep any dice and roll the rest.

Can you get a flush in poker dice?

No. The dice have no suits, so flushes and straight flushes are impossible.

What is the best hand in poker dice?

Five of a kind, with five aces the highest.
