The Price Is Right Rules

The Price Is Right is a seven-card high-low stud game in which each player is dealt two cards face down and buys the other five. In each round, every player must buy one of two face-up cards or the unseen top card of the deck, or fold, and a betting round follows. With seven cards each, players declare high, low or both, and the pot is split.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

The game is played by three to seven players with a standard 52-card deck without jokers. There are no wild cards.

1.2

Each player ends with seven cards and makes the best five-card hand from them. The best high hand and the best low hand split the pot.

1.3

High hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings. The low ranking, and whether a low hand must qualify, shall be agreed before play; ace-to-five low is the usual choice in home games.

1.4

A unit is a fixed amount agreed before play. Card prices are expressed in units.

Article 2Antes, the deal and the cards on offer

2.1

Each player antes. The dealer deals two cards face down to each player, and players may look at them.

2.2

The dealer turns two cards face up side by side in the centre, with the face-down deck next to them. The prices are:

2.2(a) The face-up card further from the deck: 1 unit.

2.2(b) The face-up card nearer the deck: 2 units.

2.2(c) The unseen top card of the deck: 3 units.

Article 3Buying rounds and betting

Each player buys five cards, one per round. Every buying round is followed by a betting round.

RoundCards held after buyingBetting starts with
1st purchase2 down, 1 boughtBest hand showing
2nd purchase2 down, 2 boughtBest hand showing
3rd purchase2 down, 3 boughtBest hand showing
4th purchase2 down, 4 boughtBest hand showing
5th purchase2 down, 5 boughtBest hand showing; then declaration and showdown
3.1

Starting with the player to the dealer's left, each player in turn must either buy one of the three cards on offer or fold. Standing pat is not allowed.

3.2

A bought face-up card stays face up in the buyer's hand. A player who buys the top card of the deck looks at it and keeps it face down.

3.3

The row is restocked as follows:

3.3(a) If the 1-unit card is bought, the 2-unit card slides across to the 1-unit position, and a new card is turned up for the 2-unit position.

3.3(b) If the 2-unit card is bought, the top card of the deck is turned up to replace it.

3.4

When every active player has bought a card, there is a betting round begun by the player with the best hand showing.

Example

Restocking the row

On offer are J♠ at 1 unit and 4♥ at 2 units.

The first player pays 2 units for the 4♥. The dealer turns up 9♣ in the 2-unit position. The next player pays 1 unit for the J♠, so the 9♣ slides into the 1-unit position and a new card is turned up at 2 units.

Article 4Declaration and showdown

4.1

After the fifth betting round, when everyone has seven cards, each remaining player declares high, low or both. The method (simultaneously with chips held in the fist, or in turn) shall be agreed before play.

4.2

The best high hand among those who declared high takes half the pot, and the best low hand among those who declared low takes the other half. Under the usual convention, a player who declares both must win, or tie, both ways.

Article 5Variations and related games

5.1

Three up cards. The row may hold three face-up cards costing 1, 2 and 3 units, with the top card of the deck costing 4 units.

Related games: Wall Street offers four cards and lets a player take a free card from the deck instead of buying. Buy Your Card uses the same pricing idea in a five-card game. For the base game, see Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo.
