Rochester Poker Rules

Rochester Poker is a five-card passing game for up to ten players. After the deal and a betting round, each player keeps one card and passes the other four to the left, then passes three, then two, then one, with a betting round after every pass. The best five-card hand at the end wins the pot.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Rochester Poker was devised by Mark Brown, as published on his games website and listed on pagat.com. Its name comes from Rochester drafting, a format in the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering in which players take one card from a pack and pass the rest along.

1.2

Up to ten players may take part, using a single 52-card deck with no jokers. There are no wild cards, and hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

The object is to hold the best five-card hand after the last pass, or to win the pot earlier by making a bet no one calls.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

Each player antes a set amount. The source notes that the forced-bet arrangements of Texas Hold'em may be used instead if the players prefer.

2.2

Each player is dealt five cards face down.

2.3

A betting round follows the deal. Players may fold during it, as in any betting round.

2.4

After each hand, the deal passes to the left.

Article 3The passes

Every pass goes to the left, and every pass is followed by a betting round.

3.1

After the first betting round, each active player keeps one card, their hold card, and passes the other four face down to the player on their left.

3.2

Each player combines the four cards received with their hold card, and a betting round follows.

3.3

Each player then passes three cards to the left and a betting round follows; then two cards, followed by a betting round; then one card, followed by the final betting round.

3.4

At each pass after the first, a player may pass any cards they choose from the five they hold. A card kept at an earlier pass is not protected and may be passed on.

3.5

Players who have folded are skipped. Cards are passed to the next active player on the left.

Example

Protecting three queens

At the third pass, Anna holds Q♥Q♠Q♦8♣4♥ and must pass two cards. She passes the 8♣4♥ and keeps her three queens.

She receives 9♠2♦ from her right. At the fourth pass she gives up the 2♦ and receives the J♣, finishing with Q♥Q♠Q♦J♣9♠: three queens.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

If two or more players remain after the final betting round, the hands are shown and the best five-card hand wins the pot.

4.2

Identical hands split the pot.

Article 5Common variations

5.1

Rochester Stud. Every card a player keeps is locked in. At each pass, the player chooses one card from those just received to add to their kept cards, and passes all the others. A player therefore keeps one card after the deal, two after the first pass, three after the second and four after the third, and receives a fifth card at the last pass.

5.2

Fewer cards passed. The first pass may be reduced to three cards (keeping two), or to two cards (keeping three). The dealer shall announce the passing sequence before the deal.

Strategy note: whatever you pass goes straight to your left-hand neighbour. Keeping a strong holding is only half the job; passing cards that cannot help that player matters too.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

Which way do you pass in Rochester Poker?

Always to the left, to the next player who has not folded.

How many betting rounds are there in Rochester Poker?

Five: one after the deal and one after each of the four passes (four cards, three, two and one).

What is Rochester Stud?

A variation in which the cards you keep are locked in. At each pass you add one of the cards you received to your kept cards and pass all the rest, so you cannot change your mind about earlier choices.
