Royal Hold'em Rules

Royal Hold'em is played exactly like Texas Hold'em, but with a 20-card deck containing only the aces, kings, queens, jacks and tens. At most six players can take part. Because the deck is so small, only five kinds of hand can occur: royal flush, four of a kind, full house, straight and two pair.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Royal Hold'em uses a deck of twenty cards: the ace, king, queen, jack and ten of each suit. There are no wild cards.

1.2

No more than six players may take part. A six-handed deal uses the whole deck: two cards to each player, five community cards and three burn cards.

1.3

The object, as in Texas Hold'em, is to win the pot with the best five-card hand from a player's two hole cards and the five community cards, or by making a bet no one calls.

1.4

Royal Hold'em was offered online for a period on the Ultimate Bet site. According to pagat.com, citing German Wikipedia, it was withdrawn in July 2007.

Article 2Blinds, the deal and betting

2.1

The button, blinds, deal, burn cards, betting rounds and showdown follow the rules of Texas Hold'em without change.

Article 3The possible hands

3.1

Only five hand types can arise. From highest to lowest:

3.1(a) royal flush;

3.1(b) four of a kind;

3.1(c) full house;

3.1(d) straight (always ace, king, queen, jack, ten);

3.1(e) two pair.

3.2

A flush is always a royal flush, because each suit contains only five cards and those five form a straight.

3.3

Every player has seven cards drawn from only five ranks, so at least two ranks must be repeated. A player with all five ranks has a straight. A player with fewer ranks has four of a kind, a full house or two pair. No player can finish with one pair, three of a kind alone or a high-card hand.

3.4

The weakest possible seven cards are two tens, two jacks, two queens and a king, which play as queens and jacks with a king kicker.

3.5

All straights are identical, so two players with straights split the pot unless one of them has a better hand.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

The best five-card hand wins, using the rankings in article 3 and the usual hand-ranking tie-breaks. Suits do not break ties.

Example

Three aces are only a straight

Board: A♥A♦K♠Q♣10♦.

Player A holds A♣J♥. A has three aces, but with the jack every rank is present, so the best hand is the straight A♣K♠Q♣J♥10♦. A full house needs a pair alongside the aces, and A has none.

Player B holds K♥K♣: K♥K♣K♠A♥A♦, kings full of aces.

A full house beats a straight, so Player B wins.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • Two pair is the weakest possible hand, so it seldom wins. A straight is the practical minimum for a strong holding.
  • A pocket pair is valuable because it gives a route to a full house or four of a kind.
  • Split pots are common, since every straight is the same straight.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

How many players can play Royal Hold'em?

Up to six. A six-player hand uses all twenty cards: twelve hole cards, five on the board and three burn cards.

Can you have a flush in Royal Hold'em?

Only a royal flush. Each suit has just five cards in the deck, so any five cards of one suit are also ace-to-ten in sequence.

What is the worst hand in Royal Hold'em?

Two pair. The weakest possible holding is tens, jacks and queens paired with a single king, which plays as queens and jacks with a king kicker.
