Screwin' Herman Rules

Screwin' Herman is a five-card home game with fives always wild. Cards are dealt two at a time: from each of the first three pairs, a player keeps one card and throws the other away, and the final two cards must both be kept. There are three betting rounds, and the best five-card hand wins.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Screwin' Herman was contributed to pagat.com by Ian Blessing. The object is to hold the best five-card poker hand at showdown, or to win the pot earlier when every other player folds.

1.2

The game uses a standard 52-card deck. Hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

All four fives are wild in every deal. A wild card may stand for any card its holder chooses.

1.4

Because wild cards are used, five of a kind is possible. As is usual in wild-card games, it ranks above a straight flush.

1.5

Each player is dealt eight cards in total, so a single deck can accommodate up to six players.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

The source does not specify the opening stake. The usual practice is for every player to ante an agreed amount before the deal.

2.2

The dealer deals two cards face down to each player. Each player looks at both cards, keeps one and discards the other.

2.3

The source does not say whether discards are shown. The dealer shall announce this before the deal. Discarding face down is the usual practice in discard games.

Article 3Play and betting

Cards are always dealt in pairs. Each player keeps one card from each of the first three pairs, and both cards of the last pair.

3.1

After the first discard, each player is dealt two more cards, keeps one of them and discards the other. Each player now holds two cards.

3.2

The first betting round then takes place.

3.3

Each active player is dealt two more cards and again keeps one and discards one, leaving three cards. The second betting round follows.

3.4

Each active player is dealt a final two cards and must keep both. Each player now holds five cards.

3.5

The final betting round takes place, followed by the showdown.

3.6

Where the source does not say who opens each betting round, the usual practice is for the first active player to the dealer's left to act first.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

Each remaining player shows their five cards. The best poker hand, with fives counted as wild, wins the pot.

4.2

Identical hands split the pot.

Example

Two wild fives beat three aces

Player A shows 5♥5♣K♠K♦9♣. The two fives are wild and both become kings, giving four kings with a nine.

Player B shows A♥A♠A♦7♣3♦, three aces with no wild card.

Four of a kind beats three of a kind, so Player A wins the pot.

Article 5Strategy notes

A five should almost always be kept whenever one appears in a pair, since it fits any hand.

The last two cards cannot be refused, so a player committed to a straight or flush after three cards still needs both of the final cards to cooperate, or a wild five.

With four wild cards in play, hands run high. Three of a kind is a modest holding in this game.
