Spanish Poker Rules

Spanish Poker is played like Texas Hold'em, with two hole cards and a five-card board, but with a 28-card deck of eights through aces. Each player must use both hole cards and exactly three board cards, and a flush ranks above a full house.

Article 1Deck, players and objective

1.1

Spanish Poker, also called synthetic poker, is a variant of Texas Hold'em that shares Omaha's rule on the use of hole cards. The object is to win the pot with the best five-card hand at showdown, or by making a bet no one calls.

1.2

The game is played with a 28-card deck consisting of the eight, nine, ten, jack, queen, king and ace of each of the four suits. All twos to sevens are removed.

1.3

The ace may be played high, above the king, or low, as if it were a seven, below the eight. The lowest straight is therefore ace-eight-nine-ten-jack, and the highest is ten-jack-queen-king-ace.

1.4

Because the deck is so small, the number of players is limited. With two hole cards each, five board cards and three burn cards, a 28-card deck can serve at most ten players.

Article 2Hand rankings

2.1

Hands rank as in Texas Hold'em, except that a flush beats a full house. The full order, from highest to lowest, is:

2.1(a) Straight flush.

2.1(b) Four of a kind.

2.1(c) Flush.

2.1(d) Full house.

2.1(e) Straight.

2.1(f) Three of a kind.

2.1(g) Two pair.

2.1(h) One pair.

2.1(i) High card.

2.2

The flush is promoted because, with only seven cards in each suit, it is harder to make than a full house. Other rankings are unchanged from the standard poker hand rankings.

2.3

Suits have no rank. Hands of the same type are compared card by card in the usual way, and exactly equal hands split the pot.

Other short-deck games treat these rankings differently. In Short Deck Hold'em, for example, the deck keeps the sixes and sevens, and a player may use any number of hole cards.

Article 3Antes, the deal and betting

3.1

Each player posts an ante before the deal. The game is usually played no-limit.

3.2

Each player is dealt two cards face down. The board is then dealt as in Hold'em, with a betting round after each stage:

RoundCards dealtBetting
Pre-flopTwo hole cards to each playerFirst betting round
FlopThree community cardsSecond betting round
TurnA fourth community cardThird betting round
RiverA fifth community cardFinal betting round
3.3

The order of action, bet sizes and the settlement of all-ins and side pots follow the Texas Hold'em rules, unless the house announces otherwise.

Article 4Making a hand and the showdown

4.1

At showdown, each player's hand shall be made from both of their hole cards and exactly three of the five community cards. A player may not play the board, nor use only one hole card.

4.2

The best hand under the Spanish Poker rankings (article 2) wins the pot. Exactly equal hands split it.

Example

A flush beats a full house

Board: 8♠9♠Q♠K♦8♦

Player A holds A♠J♠. Using both hole cards with the three board spades, A makes an ace-high flush: A-Q-J-9-8 of spades.

Player B holds K♥K♣. Using both kings with the king and two eights on the board, B makes a full house, kings full of eights.

In Hold'em, B's full house would win. In Spanish Poker the flush ranks higher, so Player A wins the pot.

Example

Both hole cards must play

Board: 10♠J♠Q♠K♠9♦

Player A holds A♠8♥. In Hold'em, the ace of spades would complete a royal flush, but here A must also use the eight of hearts.

A's best hand using both hole cards is A-8-9-T-J, with the ace counting as a seven: a jack-high straight.

Article 5Variations and related games

Spanish Poker is thinly documented, and house rules differ. Where a group changes the betting structure or the number of players, the dealer shall announce it before the deal.

  • Omaha uses the same rule of exactly two hole cards and three board cards, but with four hole cards and a full deck.
  • Short Deck Hold'em removes the twos to fives and keeps a 36-card deck.
  • Stripped deck poker covers other games played with a reduced deck.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

How many cards are in a Spanish Poker deck?

Twenty-eight: the eight through the ace in each of the four suits. The twos to sevens are removed.

Does a flush beat a full house in Spanish Poker?

Yes. With only seven cards per suit, a flush is harder to make, so it ranks above a full house. All other rankings are the same as in Texas Hold'em.

Do you have to use both hole cards in Spanish Poker?

Yes. As in Omaha, your hand must be made from both hole cards and exactly three of the community cards.
