Article 1What Speed Poker is

1.1

Speed Poker is a live format of Texas Hold'em inspired by the pace of online poker. Card Player magazine credits the Australian Keith Sloan with developing it. The rights to the concept were later bought by the Mansion Group, which trademarked the name Mansion Speed Poker.

1.2

The format has been used for televised events including the World Speed Poker Open, the Poker Dome Challenge and the Asia-Pacific Speed Poker Championship.

1.3

Any poker game could in principle be played to a shot clock, but in practice Speed Poker has been played almost entirely as Texas Hold'em.

Article 2Cards, betting and hand rankings

2.1

The deal, the blinds, the four betting rounds, the showdown and the hand rankings are the same as in Texas Hold'em. Only the time allowed for each decision differs.

2.2

The betting structure is set by the event and shall be announced in advance. Known examples include:

EventPre-flopFlop, turn and river
Poker Dome ChallengePot-limitNo-limit
World Speed Poker OpenNo-limitNo-limit

Article 3The clock

3.1

When the action reaches a player, that player has 15 seconds to act.

3.2

Each player is given one or more time extensions of 30 seconds. A player may use an extension on any turn to gain extra time for that decision. The number of extensions is set by the event.

3.3

If a player fails to act before their time, including any extension, runs out:

3.3(a) if there is a bet to that player, the hand is ruled dead and the player is treated as having folded;

3.3(b) if there has been no bet on the round, the player is treated as having checked.

Example

Out of time facing a bet

On the turn, a player holds A♥A♦ on a board of A♠7♣2♦K♥, a set of aces. An opponent bets, and the player takes too long, with no time extensions left.

When the 15 seconds expire, the hand is ruled dead. The player loses the chips already in the pot, even though they held the best hand.

Example

Out of time with no bet

On the flop, the first player to act holds 9♣8♣ and is still thinking when the clock runs out. No one has bet on this round.

The player is treated as having checked, and the action moves to the next player. The hand stays live.

Article 4Fast-fold poker

4.1

The term speed poker is also used loosely for fast-fold online poker, in which a player who folds is moved at once to a new table and dealt a new hand, instead of waiting for the current hand to finish. Examples include Full Tilt Poker's Rush Poker and PokerStars' Zoom.

4.2

Fast-fold poker is a different format from live Speed Poker. It changes how players are seated and dealt, not the time limit on each decision. The cards and betting follow the rules of the game being played, usually Hold'em or Omaha.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • Players who use their time extensions early may have none left for a difficult decision later in the event.
  • Folding is the penalty for running out of time when facing a bet, so it is better to act than to let the clock expire.
  • Many more hands are played per hour than in an ordinary live game, so the blinds and antes cost a player more quickly in real time.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

How long do you have to act in Speed Poker?

Fifteen seconds. Each player also has one or more 30-second time extensions to use on any turn.

What happens if you run out of time in Speed Poker?

If you face a bet, your hand is ruled dead and you are treated as having folded. If no one has bet, you are treated as having checked.

Is Speed Poker the same as fast-fold poker?

No. Speed Poker is live Hold'em with a shot clock. Fast-fold poker is an online format, such as Zoom or Rush Poker, where you move to a new table as soon as you fold.
