Telesina Rules

Telesina is an Italian form of five-card stud played with a deck stripped according to the number of players. Each player receives one card face down and four face up, with a betting round after each face-up card, and the best five-card hand wins. A flush ranks above a full house, and ties are broken by suit.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Telesina, also called Teresina, is played with a standard deck from which the low cards are removed. The lowest rank used is 11 minus the number of players. All cards from that rank up to the ace are used.

The object is to win the pot, either with the best five-card hand at the showdown or by making a bet no one calls.

1.3

Telesina is closely related to Italian poker and uses the same hand rankings. It is based on the five-card stud structure. Pagat.com's description is based on a contribution from Massimo Ilardo.

Article 2Hand rankings

Hand rankings differ from the standard order because flushes are harder to make in a stripped deck.

2.1

A flush ranks above a full house. All other hands rank in the usual order; see hand rankings.

2.2

As in Italian poker, the ace usually ranks high but may also count as the card just below the lowest rank in use, to complete the lowest straight. With five players, for example, A-6-7-8-9 is a straight.

2.3

Italian poker distinguishes a minimum straight flush (the lowest possible in the deck in use), a maximum straight flush (10-J-Q-K-A) and medium straight flushes (all others), with special rules on how they rank against each other. See Italian poker.

2.4

Suits. When two hands are otherwise equal, suits break the tie. From highest to lowest: hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades.

Article 3Antes and the deal

3.1

Before the deal, each player pays an agreed ante into the pot. Betting limits shall be agreed before play.

3.2

The dealer deals clockwise, one card at a time: first one card face down to each player, then one card face up to each player.

3.3

After each later betting round, one further card is dealt face up to each active player, until each has one card face down and four face up.

Article 4Betting rounds

There are four betting rounds. The player with the best cards showing opens each one.

RoundCards heldWho opens the betting
11 down, 1 upHighest face-up card; ties broken by suit
21 down, 2 upBest pair showing, otherwise highest card
31 down, 3 upBest combination showing, otherwise highest card
41 down, 4 upBest combination showing, otherwise highest card
4.1

On the first round, the player whose face-up card is highest opens. If two players show cards of the same rank, the higher suit opens: hearts, then diamonds, clubs and spades.

4.2

On later rounds, the player with the best combination of face-up cards opens. Because fewer than five cards are showing, only pairs, two pairs, three of a kind and four of a kind count; partial straights and flushes are ignored. If no one shows a pair, the highest card opens.

4.3

Betting follows the usual rules: players may check, bet, call, raise or fold in turn until all active players have contributed equally.

Example

Who opens the first round

Three players show K♠, K♥ and Q♦.

The two kings are highest. Hearts outrank spades, so the player showing the king of hearts opens the betting.

Article 5Showdown

5.1

After the fourth betting round, the remaining players turn up their face-down cards. The highest hand, under the rankings in article 2, wins the pot.

5.2

If hands are otherwise equal, suits decide, as in 2.4.

5.3

If all but one player folds, the remaining player wins without showing.

Example

A flush beats a full house

Five players, so the deck runs from the six to the ace.

Player A has K♥ down and 7♥9♥Q♥A♥ up: an ace-high flush. Player B has Q♣ down and 8♠8♦8♣Q♠ up: a full house, eights full of queens.

In standard poker the full house would win. In Telesina the flush ranks higher, so Player A wins.

Article 6Variations

6.1

Telesina con vela. At the start of the deal, one card, la vela, is dealt face down to the centre of the table. After the final betting round it is turned face up and becomes a community card. Each player makes the best five-card hand from their own five cards and the vela.

6.2

Con matte. The dealer names a rank, and every card of that rank is wild. A hand of four of a kind plus a wild card, called pokerissimo, ranks above a straight flush.

6.3

Con carte coperte. All cards are dealt face down. After the first two cards, each player chooses one to turn face up before the betting, and each player keeps one hidden card throughout.

6.4

Con una carta coperta. Every card except the first and last is dealt face up. Before the final betting round, each player chooses whether to show their first or their last card.

Article 7Strategy notes

  • With fewer ranks in the deck, pairs and trips come more often than in standard five-card stud, so a single pair is worth less.
  • Count the suits showing: with only eight or nine cards per suit, a few exposed hearts can make a heart flush unlikely.
  • In the vela version, every player gains a sixth card, so hands are stronger at the showdown than the up cards suggest.

Article 8Frequently asked questions

Does a flush beat a full house in Telesina?

Yes. As in Italian poker, a flush ranks above a full house, because flushes are harder to make with a stripped deck.

How many cards are used in Telesina?

It depends on the number of players. The lowest rank is 11 minus the number of players, so five players use the six to the ace (36 cards) and six players use the five to the ace (40 cards).

What is the vela in Telesina?

In Telesina con vela, one card is dealt face down to the centre at the start. It is turned up after the final betting round, and every player can use it as a sixth card.

How are ties broken in Telesina?

By suit. Hearts are highest, followed by diamonds, clubs and spades.

Who bets first in Telesina?

On the first round, the highest face-up card, with suit breaking ties. On later rounds, the player showing the best pair or better, or the highest card if nobody shows a pair.
