Wraparound Rules

Wraparound is pot-limit Texas Hold'em with two changes. Bets on the turn and river may be up to twice the size of the pot, and aces count both high and low at once, so straights may wrap around the ace, as in Q-K-A-2-3. Invented by George Weissenberger, as published on pagat.com.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Wraparound was invented and contributed to pagat.com by George Weissenberger. It is played as Texas Hold'em with the two changes set out in Articles 3 and 4. All other rules, including the blinds, the deal, the flop, turn and river and the showdown, are those of Texas Hold'em.

1.2

Between two and ten players may take part, using a standard 52-card deck with no wild cards.

1.3

Each player makes the best five-card high hand from their two hole cards and the five community cards.

Article 2Blinds and the deal

2.1

The small and big blinds are posted and two hole cards are dealt to each player, as in Texas Hold'em.

2.2

Community cards are dealt as a three-card flop, a turn and a river, with a betting round before the flop and after each stage.

Article 3Betting limits

3.1

The game is played pot-limit, with the maximum bet depending on the round:

RoundMaximum bet
Pre-flopThe size of the pot
FlopThe size of the pot
TurnTwice the size of the pot
RiverTwice the size of the pot
3.2

The source gives the limit only for bets. For raises, the usual pot-limit method measures the pot as if the raiser had first called. How the doubling applies to raises on the turn and river shall be agreed before play; the natural reading is that the pot so measured is doubled.

Example

Double-pot betting on the turn

After the flop betting, the pot holds 120. On the turn, the first player to act may bet any amount up to 240, twice the pot.

On the flop, with the same 120 in the pot, the maximum bet would have been 120.

Article 4Aces and wraparound straights

4.1

Aces count as both high and low. A straight that includes an ace may take any of these forms:

4.1(a) 10-J-Q-K-A, the ordinary ace-high straight;

4.1(b) J-Q-K-A-2, a wraparound straight;

4.1(c) Q-K-A-2-3, a wraparound straight;

4.1(d) K-A-2-3-4, a wraparound straight;

4.1(e) A-2-3-4-5, the ordinary five-high straight.

4.2

A straight shall always pass through the ace in order to wrap. Sequences such as Q-K-2-3-4, which skip the ace, are not straights.

4.3

A wraparound straight in one suit is a straight flush.

4.4

The source does not say how wraparound straights rank against each other or against ordinary straights. Players shall agree this before play. All straights, including wraparound straights, rank above three of a kind and below a flush, as in the standard hand rankings.

Example

A wraparound straight wins

Board: Q♦K♣2♠7♥9♦

Player A holds A♥3♣. Using the ace between the king and the two, A makes the wraparound straight Q-K-A-2-3.

Player B holds K♥9♠ for K-K-9-9-Q: two pair, kings and nines. The straight beats two pair, so Player A wins. In ordinary Hold'em, A would have only ace high.

Article 5Variations and notes

  • Wraparound straights add three extra straight patterns, so straights are more common than in ordinary Hold'em, especially on boards with an ace, a king or a two.
  • The larger turn and river bets make the later streets more expensive, so hands that are ahead on the flop face bigger bets later.
  • Round-the-corner straights also appear in some other home games. For other Hold'em variants, see home poker games.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

Is Q-K-A-2-3 a straight in Wraparound?

Yes. In Wraparound, aces count high and low at once, so J-Q-K-A-2, Q-K-A-2-3 and K-A-2-3-4 are all straights, as well as the usual 10-J-Q-K-A and A-2-3-4-5.

How much can you bet on the river in Wraparound?

Up to twice the size of the pot. Before the flop and on the flop, the limit is the size of the pot.

Is Wraparound played no-limit?

No. It is a pot-limit game, with the limit doubled on the turn and river.
