Casino Hold'em Rules

In Casino Hold'em, each player antes and plays a hand of Texas Hold'em against the dealer. After seeing two hole cards and the flop, the player either folds or calls with a bet of twice the ante. The dealer must hold a pair of fours or better to qualify; the ante is paid from a pay table and the call bet pays even money.

Article 1Objective and equipment

1.1

Casino Hold'em is a house-banked game. Each player plays against the dealer only. The object is to finish with a better five-card hand than the dealer.

1.2

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck with no jokers. Hands are ranked according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

Hands are formed as in Texas Hold'em: the best five cards from the player's two hole cards and five community cards. Players do not bet against each other, and there are no blinds or betting rounds between players.

1.4

The game was devised by Stephen Au-Yeung in the late 1990s and launched as a casino game in 2000.

Article 2Wagers and the deal

2.1

Before the deal, each player places an ante. A player may also place the optional AA Bonus side bet (Article 6).

2.2

The dealer deals two cards face down to each player and two cards face down to the dealer.

2.3

The dealer then deals three community cards face up: the flop.

Article 3The betting sequence

There is one decision per hand, made after the flop.

StageCardsPlayer action
Before the dealNonePlace the ante and, optionally, the AA Bonus
After the flop2 hole cards and 3 community cardsFold, or call with a bet of 2x the ante
Turn and river2 more community cards, dealt togetherNone

3.1

After looking at their hole cards and the flop, each player shall either:

3.1(a) Fold: give up the hand and lose the ante; or

3.1(b) Call: place a call bet equal to twice the ante.

3.2

When all players have acted, the dealer deals the turn and the river, completing the five-card board.

3.3

The dealer then turns over the dealer's two hole cards. Each remaining player's best five-card hand is compared with the dealer's best five-card hand.

Article 4Dealer qualification and settlement

4.1

The dealer qualifies with a pair of fours or better.

4.2

If the dealer does not qualify, the ante is paid according to the ante pay table (Article 5) and the call bet is returned as a push.

4.3

If the dealer qualifies and the player's hand is better, the ante is paid according to the ante pay table and the call bet pays 1 to 1.

4.4

If the dealer qualifies and the hands tie, the ante and the call bet both push.

4.5

If the dealer qualifies and the dealer's hand is better, the player loses the ante and the call bet.

Example

The dealer qualifies and loses

Board: K♠7♦2♣4♥J♠.

Player: A♥K♦, a pair of kings with A-J-7. Dealer: 9♠9♣, a pair of nines with K-J-7.

The dealer's pair of nines qualifies. The player's kings win. On a 10 ante and a 20 call, the ante pays 1 to 1 (10) and the call pays 1 to 1 (20): the player wins 30.

Example

The dealer does not qualify

Same board and player hand. The dealer holds Q♣3♦. The dealer's best hand is K-Q-J-7-4, with no pair.

The dealer does not qualify. The ante pays 1 to 1 (10) and the 20 call is returned. The player wins 10.

Article 5Ante pay table

The ante is paid on the player's final hand whenever the player wins or the dealer fails to qualify. Pay tables vary by casino; this is the standard table.

Player's handAnte pays
Royal flush100 to 1
Straight flush20 to 1
Four of a kind10 to 1
Full house3 to 1
Flush2 to 1
Straight or lower1 to 1
5.1

The call bet is never paid from the pay table. It pays 1 to 1 when the player beats a qualifying dealer, and pushes otherwise unless the dealer wins.

Article 6The AA Bonus side bet

6.1

The AA Bonus is an optional bet placed before the deal. It is settled on the player's two hole cards and the three flop cards only, a five-card hand, whatever happens later in the hand and whatever the dealer holds.

6.2

The bet wins if those five cards make a pair of aces or better. The standard pay table is below; some casinos use a shorter table that pays 7 to 1 for a pair of aces up to a straight and 25 to 1 for a flush or better.

Hand (hole cards and flop)AA Bonus pays
Royal flush100 to 1
Straight flush50 to 1
Four of a kind40 to 1
Full house30 to 1
Flush20 to 1
Pair of aces up to a straight7 to 1

Article 7Strategy notes

  • Most hands should be called. Optimal play calls roughly 82% of the time and folds only the weakest hands, typically two low unpaired hole cards that do not connect with the flop.
  • Folding costs one ante, while calling risks three units in total, so a fold is correct only when the hand is clearly behind.
  • With a standard pay table, the house edge on the main game is about 2.2%.

Article 8Frequently asked questions

How much is the call bet in Casino Hold'em?

The call bet is always twice the ante. If you ante 10, you call with 20.

What does the dealer need to qualify in Casino Hold'em?

A pair of fours or better. If the dealer does not qualify, your ante is paid from the pay table and your call bet is returned.

What happens if you tie the dealer in Casino Hold'em?

If the dealer qualifies and the hands are equal, both the ante and the call bet push.

Is Casino Hold'em the same as Texas Hold'em?

The hands are formed the same way, but you play against the dealer rather than other players, you make one decision after the flop, and there is no bluffing because the dealer never folds.

Does the AA Bonus depend on the dealer's hand?

No. It is settled only on your two hole cards and the three flop cards, and pays for a pair of aces or better.
