Mississippi Stud Rules

In Mississippi Stud, the player antes and receives two hole cards, and three community cards are turned one at a time. Before each community card, the player either folds or raises one to three times the ante. The final five-card hand is paid from a table: jacks or better win, a pair of sixes to tens pushes, and anything else loses.

Article 1Objective and equipment

1.1

Mississippi Stud is a house-banked game introduced by Scientific Games. Hands are not compared with the dealer's or with each other. Each player's final hand is paid from a fixed pay table.

1.2

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck with no jokers. Hands are ranked according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

The three decisions are called third, fourth and fifth street, borrowing the street names of stud poker.

Article 2The ante and the deal

2.1

Each player places an ante before the deal.

2.2

The dealer deals two cards face down to each player and three community cards face down in the centre of the table.

Article 3The streets and raises

There are three decisions. At each one, the player must fold or raise; there is no option to check.

StreetCards the player can seeDecision
3rd streetTwo hole cardsFold, or raise 1x, 2x or 3x the ante
4th streetHole cards and the first community cardFold, or raise 1x, 2x or 3x the ante
5th streetHole cards and two community cardsFold, or raise 1x, 2x or 3x the ante
SettlementAll five cardsNone; the third community card is turned and bets are paid
3.1

A player who folds at any street loses the ante and every raise already made.

3.2

A player who plays all three streets will have raised at least three and at most nine times the ante, for a total wager of four to ten antes.

3.3

After all players have acted on each street, the dealer turns over the next community card.

Article 4Settlement

4.1

When the third community card is turned, each remaining player's hand is their two hole cards plus the three community cards.

4.2

The ante and all raises are paid at the odds in the pay table (Article 5) if the hand is a pair of jacks or better.

4.3

A pair of sixes, sevens, eights, nines or tens is a push: the ante and raises are returned.

4.4

Any lower hand loses the ante and all raises.

Example

Jacks with a big raise

Ante 10. The player holds J♥J♣ and raises 3x (30) on 3rd street.

First community card: 4♦. The player raises 1x (10). Second community card: 9♠. The player raises 1x (10). Third community card: 2♣.

Final hand: J-J-9-4-2, a pair of jacks. The total wager is 60 (10 + 30 + 10 + 10), paid at 1 to 1. The player wins 60.

Example

A push on a middle pair

Ante 10. The player holds 7♠7♦ and raises 1x on every street, a total wager of 40.

The community cards are K♥3♣9♦. Final hand: a pair of sevens.

A pair of sixes to tens pushes, so all 40 is returned.

Article 5Pay table

Pay tables vary by casino. This is the standard table, applied to the ante and every raise.

Article 6Strategy notes

  • Raise the maximum with any pair, any royal flush draw and the strongest straight flush draws.
  • Raise the minimum with weaker holdings that still have value, such as two cards of jack or higher; fold hands with little chance of reaching a pair of sixes or better.
  • With the standard pay table and optimal strategy, the house edge is about 4.9% of the ante.
