Celestial Poker Rules

In Celestial Poker each player is dealt five cards, and a five-card board is dealt as in Omaha, with a draw after the flop. At the showdown the pot is split in two: half for the best five-card hand from a player's own cards alone, and half for the best Omaha hand, using exactly two cards from the hand and three from the board.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck with no jokers and no wild cards. Five or six players is ideal; up to nine may play, in which case discards will need to be reshuffled for the draw.

1.2

Every pot that reaches a showdown is split into two halves:

1.2(a) the draw half, won by the best five-card hand made from a player's own five cards only; and

1.2(b) the Omaha half, won by the best hand made from exactly two of the player's own cards and exactly three community cards, as in Omaha.

1.3

Both halves are decided by the standard hand rankings. One player may win both halves.

1.4

According to pagat.com, the game was first played in 2004 at the Sviten poker club in Stockholm under the name Sviten Special. The same game had been played in French Canada in the 1980s as Celestial Poker. It is also known as Drawmaha.

Article 2Blinds and the deal

2.1

The game uses a dealer button and two blinds, as in Texas Hold'em: the player to the dealer's left posts the small blind and the next player posts the big blind.

2.2

The game is preferably played pot-limit, which was its original format. Players shall agree the blinds and betting structure before play.

2.3

The dealer deals five cards face down to each player, one at a time.

Article 3Betting, the flop and the draw

StageWhat happensFirst to act
Pre-flopFive cards dealt to each player; first betting roundPlayer left of the big blind
FlopA card is burned and three community cards are dealt face up; second betting roundFirst active player left of the dealer
DrawEach player may exchange zero to five cards; no bettingClockwise from the dealer's left
TurnA card is burned and a fourth community card is dealt; third betting roundFirst active player left of the dealer
RiverA fifth community card is dealt; fourth betting roundFirst active player left of the dealer
3.1

At the draw, each active player may discard any number of cards from none to all five and receives the same number of replacements from the deck.

3.2

If the deck runs out during the draw, the discards and folded cards are shuffled together and used to complete the replacements.

3.3

If all but one player folds at any point, the remaining player wins the whole pot without showing.

Article 4Showdown and splitting the pot

4.1

Each remaining player shows their five cards. The best draw hand wins one half of the pot and the best Omaha hand wins the other.

4.2

A tie within either half splits that half equally.

Example

Each player wins one half

Board: K♠9♥4♦7♣2♠

Player A holds 8♥8♦8♣Q♠Q♦. Player B holds A♥K♥10♥5♥3♥.

Draw half. A's own cards make a full house, eights full of queens. B's make an ace-high flush. The full house wins, so A takes the draw half.

Omaha half. A's best is Q-Q with the board's K-9-7, a pair of queens. B's best is A-K with the board's K-9-7, a pair of kings with an ace kicker. B takes the Omaha half.

Article 5Common variations

  • One-card exchange shown face up. A player drawing a single card receives it face up and may accept it or reject it; a rejected card is replaced with one dealt face down.
  • Canadian draw methods. Reported versions include drawing face down only, drawing face up with the right to reject, and drawing two face-down cards and keeping one hidden.
  • Communist pot. Every player antes five times the big blind, there is no betting after the deal, and the flop is dealt at once.
  • Roll your own. Each player turns one of their cards face up after the turn and another after the river, before the betting on those streets.

Pagat.com credits Jonas Uebel and Sébastien for reports of these regional versions.

Article 6Strategy notes

  • The draw comes after the flop, so you can draw towards an Omaha hand that fits the board as well as a strong hand in your own five cards.
  • Hands that serve both halves, such as a pair that matches a board card, can scoop the pot.
  • Keeping five cards pat is strong for the draw half but tells opponents your own hand is already made.
