Spit in the Ocean Rules

In Spit in the Ocean, each player is dealt four cards and a single card is dealt face up to the table. That card, and every card of the same rank, is wild, and every player uses the table card as the fifth card of their hand. After a betting round and a draw, there is a second betting round and a showdown for the highest hand.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

The object of the game is to win the pot, either by holding the best five-card hand at showdown or by making a bet that no other player calls.

1.2

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck without jokers.

1.3

Each player's hand consists of their four private cards plus the single face-up card on the table, often called the spit card.

1.4

Wild cards. The spit card is wild, and so is every other card of the same rank. Because up to four wild cards may be in play, five of a kind is possible. Unless the dealer announces otherwise, five of a kind ranks above a straight flush. See hand rankings.

1.5

Spit in the Ocean is thought to be the earliest shared-card poker game. It appears in the 1926 edition of the United States Playing Card Company's Official Rules of Card Games, as an offshoot of Wild Widow, a five-card draw game in which a face-up card only showed which rank was wild.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

Before the deal, each player puts in the ante agreed for the game.

2.2

The dealer deals four cards face down to each player, one at a time and clockwise, then deals one card face up to the centre of the table.

2.3

There is then a first round of betting.

Article 3The draw and second betting round

StageWhat happens
DealFour cards to each player; one wild card face up on the table
First betting roundOn the four-card hands and the spit card
DrawEach player in turn may exchange cards from their four
Second betting roundAfter the draw
ShowdownFour private cards plus the spit card
3.1

After the first betting round, each active player in turn, starting at the dealer's left, may discard any number of their four cards face down and receive the same number of replacements from the dealer. A player may also keep all four cards (stand pat).

3.2

The spit card cannot be discarded. It remains part of every player's hand.

3.3

Some groups limit the draw to two cards. The dealer shall announce any limit before the deal. In practice the limit makes little difference, as discarding three or four cards is rarely sensible.

3.4

After the draw there is a second round of betting.

3.5

If all but one player folds at any point, the remaining player wins the pot without showing their cards.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

After the second betting round, the players still in the hand show their cards. Each hand is the player's four cards plus the spit card, and the highest hand wins the pot.

4.2

A wild card may stand for any card its holder chooses. If two hands are identical, the pot is split equally.

Example

A wild card completes a straight flush

The spit card is 7♥, so all sevens are wild.

Player A keeps K♠K♦7♣, discards one card and draws 9♣. With two wild sevens (the spit card and the seven in hand), A has four kings with a nine.

Player B keeps Q♥J♥10♥, discards one card and draws 8♥. The wild spit card stands for the nine of hearts, giving B Q-J-10-9-8 of hearts, a straight flush.

A straight flush beats four of a kind, so Player B wins the pot.

Article 5Related games

Spit in the Ocean led to the larger shared-card games such as Cincinnati, Round the World and Lame Brain Pete, where several table cards are turned one at a time. It is also a common choice in dealer's choice games.
