Crazy 4 of Spades Rules

Crazy 4 of Spades is played like Five Card Draw, with one twist: the four of spades is always wild. A player who holds it can also use any other fours in their hand as wild cards. Without the four of spades, the other fours are ordinary cards.

Type
Draw
Wild cards
4♠; other fours only with the 4♠
Draw
Up to 3 cards (4 with an ace)
Pot
High only; often "two to win"

Article 1Players, deck and wild cards

1.1

Crazy 4 of Spades is a variant of Five Card Draw contributed to pagat.com by Ryan Turnbaugh. It uses a standard 52-card deck, and the best five-card high hand wins.

1.2

The four of spades is always wild.

1.3

A player who holds the four of spades may also use any other four in their hand (clubs, hearts or diamonds) as a wild card.

1.4

In a hand without the four of spades, the other fours are natural fours.

1.5

Hands are ranked by the standard poker hand rankings. With all four fours wild, five of a kind is possible. The source does not rank it; the usual practice is that five of a kind beats a straight flush, and the group shall confirm this before play.

Article 2The deal, the draw and betting

2.1

Each player antes and receives five cards face down. A betting round follows.

2.2

Each remaining player may then discard and draw up to three cards, or up to four if they hold an ace. A common practice in draw games is that a player who draws four shall show the ace they are keeping; the group shall agree whether this is required.

2.3

A second betting round follows the draw, then the showdown.

Article 3Showdown

3.1

The remaining players show their hands, and the best five-card hand, using wild cards as set out in article 1, wins.

Example

The same fours, with and without the spade

Player A holds 4♠4♦Q♥Q♣9♠. Because A has the four of spades, both fours are wild, and A has four queens with a nine.

Player B holds 4♥4♣Q♠Q♦9♥. B has no four of spades, so B's fours are natural. B has two pair, queens and fours. A wins.

Article 4Two to win

The source says the game is usually played "two to win": a player must win two hands in a row to collect the pot.

4.1

The winner of a hand collects nothing but takes a token.

4.2

If a different player wins the next hand, the token passes to that player.

4.3

When the player holding the token wins again, that player collects the pot, and the token goes back to the centre for the winner of the next hand.

4.4

The same method may be used with ordinary Five Card Draw or Jacks or Better, where pots tend to be small.

Article 5Variations

  • Any card can take the place of the four of spades. The rule is then that the chosen card is wild, and other cards of its rank are wild only in the same hand.
  • Played without the two-to-win rule, each hand's winner collects the pot as in standard Five Card Draw.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

Are all fours wild in Crazy 4 of Spades?

Only if you hold the four of spades. The four of spades is always wild, and it makes the other fours in your hand wild too. Without it, fours are ordinary cards.

How many cards can you draw in Crazy 4 of Spades?

Up to three, or up to four if you keep an ace.

What does "two to win" mean?

A player has to win two hands in a row to collect the pot. The first win earns a token, and the pot is paid out only when the token holder wins again.
