Trips to Win Rules

Trips to Win is Jacks or Better draw poker with a second qualifier: a player needs a pair of jacks or better to open, and three of a kind or better to win the pot. If no remaining player has trips after the draw, the pot stays on the table and is replayed by the players who did not fold.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

The object of the game is to win the pot with a hand of three of a kind or better.

1.2

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck, and hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings. A joker may be added as a bug if agreed (see article 6).

1.3

As in any Jacks or Better game, at least four players make the best game, and six is a comfortable maximum.

1.4

Except where this page says otherwise, the rules of Jacks or Better apply, as set out on the Five Card Draw page.

Article 2Antes, deal and opening

2.1

Before the deal every player places the agreed ante in the pot. Each player is then dealt five cards face down, one at a time.

2.2

The first betting round begins with the player to the dealer's left. A player may open the betting only with a pair of jacks or better. Until the pot is opened, players may only check.

2.3

Once the pot is opened, any player may call or raise, whatever they hold.

2.4

If no one opens, the cards are thrown in, the antes stay in the pot, and the deal passes to the left.

2.5

The rules on splitting and proving openers are the same as in Jacks or Better.

Article 3The draw and second betting round

StageRequirementFirst to act
First betting roundJacks or better to openPlayer to the dealer's left
DrawNoneFirst active player to the dealer's left
Second betting roundNoneThe opener
ShowdownThree of a kind or better to winLast player to bet or raise
3.1

Each active player in turn may discard and draw replacement cards, under the draw limit used for Five Card Draw (usually three cards).

3.2

After the draw there is a second betting round, begun by the opener.

Article 4The winning requirement

4.1

A hand must be three of a kind or better to win the pot.

4.2

At showdown, the best hand among those shown wins, provided it is at least three of a kind.

4.3

If the pot is won without a showdown, because every other player folded, the winner shall still show enough cards to prove a hand of three of a kind or better.

4.4

The requirement to win is separate from the requirement to open. The opener must still prove openers, and a player who holds trips but did not open wins the pot in the normal way.

Article 5When no one has trips

5.1

If no player remaining after the draw holds three of a kind or better, the pot is not won. It stays on the table for a new deal.

5.2

Players who folded before the draw take no further part in that pot. The players who did not fold each ante again, and the new deal is dealt to them only.

5.3

The replayed deal follows the same rules: jacks or better to open and trips to win. The published rules do not say whether players who fold in the replay keep any claim; the dealer shall announce the group's practice before play.

Example

Nobody makes trips

Five players ante. Player A opens with J♣J♦8♠6♥3♣. Players B and C call; D and E fold.

After the draw, A has two pairs, B has a pair of aces and C has a busted flush draw. All three check, and no one can show three of a kind.

The pot is not won. A, B and C ante again and a new deal is dealt to those three players only. D and E sit out until the pot is won.

Example

Winning without a call

After the draw, Player A holds 7♠7♦7♥K♣4♦ and bets. Everyone else folds.

A must still show the three sevens to prove the hand qualifies, and then takes the pot.

Article 6Common variations

  • With a bug. A joker is often added as a bug, usable as an ace or to complete a straight or flush. A pair of aces with the bug counts as three aces and so qualifies to win. See Five Card Draw with a Bug.
  • With wild cards. Trips to Win may be combined with deuces wild; see Five Card Draw Deuces Wild.
  • Progressive openers. Some groups raise the opening requirement to queens, then kings, then aces after each deal in which no one opens, before stepping back down.

For a game that turns to low instead when no one can open, see Jacks Back.

Article 7Frequently asked questions

What does trips to win mean in poker?

It means a hand must be at least three of a kind to take the pot. A hand of two pairs or less cannot win, even if it is the best hand at the table.

What happens if nobody has three of a kind?

The pot stays in play. The players who folded before the draw drop out of that pot, and the players who stayed in ante again and play a new deal among themselves.

Do you need trips to open in Trips to Win?

No. You need a pair of jacks or better to open, as in Jacks or Better. Three of a kind is only needed to win.

Do you have to show your hand if everyone folds?

Yes. A player who wins without a showdown must still show enough cards to prove three of a kind or better.
