Five Card Draw with a Bug Rules

Five Card Draw with a Bug is ordinary Five Card Draw played with a 53-card deck: the standard pack plus one joker. The joker is a limited wild card called the bug. It may be used only as an ace or to complete a straight, a flush or a straight flush, so the best possible hand is five aces.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

The object of the game is to win the pot, either by holding the best five-card hand at showdown or by making a bet that no other player calls.

1.2

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck to which one joker is added, making 53 cards. The joker is called the bug.

1.3

Between two and six players may take part. Because the deck holds only one extra card, the limits on player numbers are the same as in Five Card Draw.

1.4

Apart from the use of the bug set out in article 2, and the ranking of five aces in article 5, the game follows the rules of Five Card Draw.

Article 2How the bug may be used

The bug is not a full wild card. It has only two uses.

2.1

The holder may use the bug as an ace of any suit.

2.2

The holder may use the bug as any card needed to complete a straight, a flush or a straight flush.

2.3

The bug may not represent any other card. It cannot pair a king, fill a full house or make four of a kind except in aces.

2.3(a) A hand of two pairs plus the bug, such as 9-9-7-7 and the joker, is two pairs with an ace kicker, not a full house.

2.3(b) A pair of aces plus the bug is three aces; three aces plus the bug is four aces; four aces plus the bug is five aces.

2.4

The bug in a flush. When the bug completes a flush, it counts as the highest card of that suit not already in the hand. If the hand already contains the ace of the suit, the bug counts as the king; if it holds the ace and king, as the queen; and so on.

2.5

When the bug completes a straight, it counts as whichever rank the straight needs. Where more than one rank would complete a straight, it takes the rank that makes the highest straight.

Article 3Antes, deal and first betting round

3.1

Before the deal every player places the agreed ante in the pot. A game may use blinds instead of, or as well as, antes, as in Five Card Draw.

3.2

Each player is dealt five cards face down, one at a time, clockwise, beginning with the player to the dealer's left.

3.3

The first betting round begins with the player to the dealer's left, or, in a blind game, with the player to the left of the big blind.

3.4

If the bug is played in a Jacks or Better game, a hand that contains an ace and the bug is a pair of aces and qualifies to open.

Article 4The draw and second betting round

StageWhat happensFirst to act
First betting roundAfter five cards are dealtPlayer to the dealer's left (or left of the big blind)
DrawEach active player may exchange cardsFirst active player to the dealer's left
Second betting roundAfter the drawThe player who opened the first round
ShowdownIf two or more players remainLast player to bet or raise
4.1

Each active player in turn announces how many cards to exchange, discards them face down, and receives the same number of replacements from the dealer.

4.2

The usual limit is three cards. Some groups allow a player to draw four cards when keeping an ace, and some allow any number up to five. The dealer shall announce the limit before the deal.

4.3

A player who draws the bug may use it at showdown under article 2.

4.4

After the draw there is a second betting round. Bet limits in this round are often double those of the first round.

Article 5Hand rankings and showdown

5.1

Hands rank as in the standard poker hand rankings, with one addition: five aces (four aces and the bug) is the highest hand and beats a straight flush, including a royal flush.

RankHandCan the bug help?
1Five acesYes: it is the fifth ace
2Straight flushYes
3Four of a kindOnly four aces
4Full houseOnly if the three of a kind is aces (A-A-bug with a pair)
5FlushYes
6StraightYes
7Three of a kindOnly three aces
8Two pairsOnly if one pair is aces
9One pairOnly a pair of aces
10High cardIt counts as an ace
5.2

If more than one player remains after the second betting round, the last player to bet or raise shows first. If everyone checked, the opener shows first. The best hand wins the pot.

5.3

Hands of equal rank are compared card by card, with the bug counted as the card it represents. If the hands are identical, the pot is split.

Example

The bug in a flush

Player A holds A♠K♠J♠4♠2♠, an ace-high flush.

Player B holds A♦10♦9♦8♦ and the joker. Because B already has the ace of diamonds, the bug counts as the king, giving A-K-10-9-8.

Both flushes begin A-K. A's third card, the jack, beats B's ten, so Player A wins.

Example

The bug does not make a full house

Player A holds 9♣9♥7♠7♦ and the joker. The bug cannot be a nine or a seven, so the hand is two pairs, nines and sevens, with an ace kicker.

Player B holds 5♣5♠5♦K♥3♣, three fives. Three of a kind beats two pairs, so Player B wins.

Article 6Combining the bug with other draw games

The bug may be added to any of the common five-card draw games:

  • Five Card Draw with no opening requirement (sometimes called California Draw).
  • Jacks or Better, where a pair of jacks or better is needed to open (see Five Card Draw).
  • Trips to Win, where three of a kind or better is needed to win.
  • Jacks Back, where the joker is a bug for high and a fitter (the lowest card not already in the hand) for low.

For a game in which every deuce is fully wild, see Five Card Draw Deuces Wild.

Article 7Frequently asked questions

What does the bug mean in poker?

The bug is a joker that is only partly wild. It can be used as an ace, or to complete a straight, flush or straight flush. It cannot be used as any other card.

Can the joker make a full house in Five Card Draw with a Bug?

Only in aces. Two pairs plus the joker is still two pairs, with the joker counting as an ace kicker. A pair of aces and another pair plus the joker makes aces full.

What is the best hand when playing with a bug?

Five aces: all four aces plus the joker. It beats a straight flush, including a royal flush.

What card does the bug count as in a flush?

The highest card of that suit that is not already in the hand. If you hold the ace of the suit, the bug is the king.
