Five Card Roll Your Own Rules

Five Card Roll Your Own is a five-card stud game in which players choose which cards to show. Each player is dealt six cards and discards three into a shared face-down pool, then draws twice from that pool while turning up one card at a time. At the end, one pool card is turned up and every card of its rank is wild.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Five Card Roll Your Own was contributed to pagat.com by Dave DeLine. It uses a standard 52-card deck. Each player is dealt six cards, so up to eight can play.

1.2

Each player ends with five cards, three face up and two face down. The best five-card hand wins the pot.

1.3

At the end of the hand, one rank becomes wild for everyone (4.1). Five of a kind is possible and ranks above a straight flush. See hand rankings.

Article 2The deal and the pool

2.1

Each player is dealt six cards face down.

2.2

After looking at their cards, each player discards three of them face down into a common pool, without showing them to anyone. The dealer shuffles the pool cards together.

2.3

Each player now holds three cards. All players choose one of them and turn it face up at the same time.

Article 3Drawing, rolling and betting

3.1

First round. The player with the highest up card opens the betting.

3.2

First draw. Each active player, starting with the player with the highest up card, draws one card face down from the pool. After looking at it, each player chooses one of their three down cards to expose, and all players turn their chosen cards up together. Each player now has two cards up and two down.

3.3

Second round. The player with the highest two cards showing opens the betting.

3.4

Second draw. Each active player draws another card from the pool, starting with the player with the highest cards showing, and again all players turn up one of their down cards together. Each player now has three cards up and two down.

3.5

Third round. A betting round follows. The source does not name its opener; the usual practice is the best hand showing.

Article 4The wild card and the showdown

4.1

After the third betting round, the player with the lowest hand showing chooses one of the cards remaining in the pool and turns it face up. Every card of that rank is wild.

4.2

The turned card belongs to no player and is not part of anyone's hand. It only names the wild rank. For example, if a queen is turned, the other three queens are wild.

4.3

A final betting round follows. If two or more players remain, there is a showdown and the best five-card hand wins.

Example

Queens become wild

The pool card turned is the Q♦, so queens are wild.

Player A shows 7♠7♥K♣ and has Q♠7♦ down. With the queen of spades wild, A has four sevens.

Player B shows A♥A♦5♣ and has Q♥Q♣ down. With two wild queens, B has four aces, which beats A's four sevens.
