Fives Rules

Fives is a draw game with five draws, each paid for card by card, and just one betting round at the end. The catch is that the winning hand must contain a five. If the best hand at showdown has no five, nobody wins: the remaining players ante again and replay for the same pot.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Fives, also written 5s, is a variant of Five Card Draw contributed to pagat.com by Don Cunningham.

1.2

It uses a standard 52-card deck with no wild cards. Hands are ranked by the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

To win the pot, a player must hold the best hand at showdown and that hand must contain at least one five.

Article 2Antes, the deal and the five draws

2.1

Each player antes and is dealt five cards face down.

2.2

There are then five draws. In each draw, every player may discard any number of cards, from none to all five, and receives the same number of replacements.

2.3

A player pays a fixed amount into the pot for every card drawn. The amount per card is usually equal to the ante.

2.4

There is no betting during the draws.

2.5

The deck will often run out. When it does, the discards are shuffled and play continues with them.

Article 3Betting, showdown and replays

3.1

After the fifth draw there is a single betting round, followed by the showdown.

3.2

If the best hand at showdown contains a five, it wins the pot.

3.3

If the best hand does not contain a five, no one wins, even if another player's hand contains a five. The players who did not fold each ante again and play a new hand for the same pot. Players who folded take no part in the replay.

3.4

If hands tie, a tied hand containing a five beats one without. If both tied hands contain a five and are identical, the pot is split.

Example

The best hand has no five

Two players reach the showdown. A holds K♠K♦K♣8♥8♠, a full house. B holds 6♥6♦6♣5♠2♦, three sixes with a five.

A has the better hand, but it contains no five, so A cannot win. B holds a five, but B's hand is not the best. Neither player wins. A and B each ante again and replay for the same pot.

Example

The cost of drawing

With an ante and draw price of 1 chip, a player who draws 3, 2, 2, 0 and 1 cards over the five draws pays 8 chips for the draws, on top of the ante.

Article 4Variations

  • Fives wild. The fives are wild cards.
  • Twos wild. The twos are wild and the fives are not, but the winning hand must still contain a five.
  • Two decks. Two decks could be used to avoid running out, but this changes the odds and raises the question of how to rank hands with identical cards, which the group would need to settle.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • A player with a strong hand but no five may still stay in, to stop an opponent from winning the pot cheaply with a weaker hand that has a five.
  • Because of replays, pots can grow very large. The source reports pots of 200 times the ante or more.
  • Every card drawn costs money, so long draws for a single five can become expensive.
