Four-Two-Two Rules

Four-Two-Two is a Guts game with twos wild. Each player is dealt four cards face down and all declare at once whether they are in. Players who stay in receive two more cards face up and make their best five-card hand from six cards; the best hand wins the pot and every other player who stayed in pays to match it. The game was described by Brian Johnson, as published on pagat.com.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Four-Two-Two was contributed to pagat.com by Brian Johnson. It uses the match-pot betting of Guts rather than ordinary poker betting.

1.2

A standard 52-card deck without jokers is used. All twos are wild.

1.3

Because of the wild twos, five of a kind is possible. Unless the dealer announces otherwise, it ranks above a straight flush. See hand rankings.

1.4

The object is to hold the best five-card hand, from six cards, among the players who stay in, or to be the only player who stays in.

1.5

Before play, the players shall agree the ante and a maximum amount that a losing player can be made to pay on a single deal.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

To start the pot, every player pays the agreed ante.

2.2

The dealer deals four cards face down to each player, one at a time and clockwise. Each player looks at their own cards.

Article 3Declaring and the second deal

StageWhat happens
DealFour cards face down to each player
DeclareAll players show at once whether they are in or out
Second dealTwo cards face up to each player who is in
ShowdownBest five-card hand from six cards wins; other players who were in match the pot
3.1

The players declare simultaneously. Each player holds a closed fist over the table, with a coin or chip inside if they are playing and empty if not, and all open their hands together.

3.2

If only one player is in, that player wins the whole pot and the game ends.

3.3

If two or more players are in, the dealer deals each of them two more cards face up, so that each has six cards.

Article 4Showdown and payments

4.1

The players who are in show their hands. Each makes the best five-card poker hand from their six cards, and the best hand wins the pot.

4.2

Every other player who stayed in pays an amount equal to the pot, up to the agreed maximum. These payments form the pot for the next deal, and play continues until one player stays in alone.

4.3

The source does not say how ties are settled. The usual Guts practice is that tied winners share the pot; the dealer shall announce the rule before the deal.

Example

A wild two completes a straight flush

Player A holds 2♥Q♣Q♦8♠ and receives J♥Q♥ face up. The wild two makes a fourth queen: Q-Q-Q-Q with a jack.

Player B holds 9♠10♠J♠3♦ and receives 2♦K♠ face up. The wild two stands for the queen of spades, giving B K-Q-J-10-9 of spades, a straight flush.

A straight flush beats four of a kind, so Player B wins the pot and Player A pays an amount equal to it, up to the agreed maximum.

Article 5Common variations

The dealer shall announce any of these before the deal.

5.1

Ante to drop. Players who drop out must pay a new ante, while losers who stayed in match the pot.

5.2

Nobody plays. If no one is in, the player with the best hand among all the non-players matches the pot, and so does every non-player who held a two.

5.3

Playing the deck. If only one player is in, their four cards play against the top four cards of the deck. If the player wins, they take the pot and the game ends; if the deck wins, the player matches the pot.

In Four-Two-Three, the players who are in share three face-up table cards instead of receiving two cards each.
