Grocery Store Dots Rules

Grocery Store Dots is seven-card stud in which, on fourth, fifth and sixth streets, a player may buy a face-up card from a row of three priced cards instead of taking the next card from the deck. At the showdown, the pot is split between the best five-card poker hand and the player whose seven cards show the most dots in their centre column.

Article 1Players, deck, dots and objective

1.1

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck without jokers. There are no wild cards. The deal follows seven-card stud except where these rules say otherwise.

1.2

The pot is split between two winners:

1.2(a) the player with the best five-card high hand, ranked by the standard poker hand rankings; and

1.2(b) the player whose seven cards hold the most dots.

1.3

A card's dots are the suit symbols in the middle column of its face, counted as follows:

RankDots
Ace, 5, 7, 91
2, 8, 102
33
4, 6, jack, queen, king0
1.4

A unit is a fixed amount agreed before play. Store prices are expressed in units.

Article 2Antes, the deal and the store

2.1

Each player antes. The dealer deals two cards face down and one face up to each player, as in seven-card stud, and the first betting round follows.

2.2

After the first betting round, the dealer sets out the grocery store: a row of three face-up cards in the centre. A chip or other marker is placed on the leftmost card.

2.3

The marked card costs 1 unit, the card next to it 2 units and the third card 3 units.

Article 3Buying from the store, and betting

StreetCardStore open?
Third2 down, 1 up, dealtNo; the store is set out after this betting round
Fourth1 upYes
Fifth1 upYes
Sixth1 upYes; unsold stock is then discarded
Seventh1 down, dealtNo
3.1

On fourth, fifth and sixth streets, a player about to be dealt a face-up card may instead buy one of the store's cards, paying its price into the pot. A player who does not buy is dealt the next card from the deck face up, as normal.

3.2

When a card is bought, the store is restocked from the deck just before the next player's decision. So if the dealer buys a card, the store is not restocked until after the betting round that follows.

3.3

When every player has four face-up cards, the remaining store cards are discarded. After the betting round on sixth street, each player is dealt a final card face down, and the last betting round follows.

3.4

There is a betting round after each street, making five in all. Betting order follows the usual seven-card stud practice.

Example

Buying for dots

The store holds 3♠ at 1 unit, K♦ at 2 units and 8♥ at 3 units.

A player chasing dots pays 1 unit for the 3♠, which carries three dots. The store is refilled from the deck before the next player decides whether to buy or take a card from the deck.

Article 4Showdown and splitting the pot

4.1

After the final betting round, the remaining players show their hands. Half the pot goes to the best five-card high hand and half to the player with the most dots across all seven cards.

4.2

All seven cards count towards dots, whether or not they are part of the player's best poker hand.

4.3

The source rules do not say how a tie for most dots is settled. The usual practice in split-pot games is to share that half equally; the dealer shall confirm this before the deal.

Example

Counting dots at the showdown

Player A holds K♠K♥K♦Q♣4♥6♠J♦: three kings, but no dots.

Player B holds 7♠A♥9♦5♣3♠2♥10♣. The dots are 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 11. B has no pair, straight or flush, so B's best poker hand is only ace high.

If these are the only two players, A wins the high half with three kings and B wins the dots half with 11.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

How do you count dots in Grocery Store Dots?

Count the suit symbols in the middle column of each card. Aces, 5s, 7s and 9s have one; 2s, 8s and 10s have two; 3s have three; 4s, 6s and picture cards have none. Add up all seven of your cards.

Do you have to buy from the grocery store?

No. On fourth, fifth and sixth streets you may buy a store card instead of your next face-up card, but if you don't, you are dealt a card from the deck as usual.

Can you buy the last card in Grocery Store Dots?

No. The store is discarded once everyone has four up cards, and the seventh card is always dealt face down from the deck.
