Jersey Holdem Rules

Jersey Holdem is played like Omaha hi-lo eight or better, except that each player may use either two or three hole cards, together with three or two board cards, for each half of the pot. In the North Jersey version players receive five hole cards; in South Jersey they receive four. Contributed to pagat.com by Mike Picollelli; the game was formerly known as Cosmic Poker.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Jersey Holdem, formerly called Cosmic Poker, was contributed to pagat.com by Mike Picollelli. It is a variation of Omaha hi-lo (eight or better) and follows those rules except as stated here.

1.2

The game uses a standard 52-card deck with no wild cards. High hands are ranked by the standard hand rankings; low hands are ranked ace-to-five, with straights and flushes ignored.

1.3

The pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualifying low hand. A low hand qualifies only if its five cards are all different and are eight or lower.

Article 2The deal and the betting

2.1

Blinds or antes, the button and the betting are the same as in Omaha hi-lo.

2.2

The number of hole cards depends on the version:

2.2(a) North Jersey: each player is dealt five cards face down.

2.2(b) South Jersey: each player is dealt four cards face down.

2.3

The flop, turn and river are dealt as in Omaha, with a betting round before the flop and after each stage.

Article 3Making a hand

3.1

For the high hand, a player shall use either two hole cards with three board cards, or three hole cards with two board cards.

3.2

The low hand is made the same way, and the player may choose a different combination of cards, and a different two-or-three split, for low than for high.

3.3

A player may not use four or more hole cards, or fewer than two, in either hand.

Example

Three hole cards make both halves

Board: 7♠8♦Q♥5♣K♦

A South Jersey player holds A♥2♣3♦K♠.

Low: using three hole cards, the ace, two and three, with the seven and five from the board, gives 7-5-3-2-A. Under Omaha's two-card rule the best this player could make would be 8-7-5-2-A.

High: the best this player can make is a pair of kings. The ace and king from hand with the king, queen and eight from the board give K-K-A-Q-8.

Example

A North Jersey high hand

Board: 9♣9♥4♠J♦2♣

Player A holds 9♠J♠J♣3♥6♦. Using two hole cards (both jacks) with the board's jack and two nines, A has jacks full of nines.

Player B holds 9♦4♣4♥Q♠8♥. With the nine and two fours from hand and the two board nines, B has nines full of fours. Player A's full house is higher. Neither player can make five different cards of eight or lower, so there is no low and A takes the whole pot.

Article 4Showdown and splitting the pot

4.1

At showdown, the best high hand takes half the pot and the best qualifying low hand takes the other half.

4.2

If no low hand qualifies, the best high hand takes the whole pot. A single player may win both halves.

4.3

Ties in either half are split equally among the tied players, as in Omaha hi-lo.

Article 5Strategy notes

5.1

With three hole cards available, full houses and four of a kind are much more common than in Omaha. A strong made hand on the flop is often beaten by the turn or river.

5.2

Because a low can be made with only two low board cards when three hole cards are used, low hands are made more often than in Omaha hi-lo.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between North and South Jersey Holdem?

North Jersey players are dealt five hole cards; South Jersey players are dealt four. In both, you may use two or three hole cards with three or two board cards.

Do you have to use two cards in Jersey Holdem?

You must use at least two and at most three hole cards. The rest of the hand comes from the board, so a five-card hand is always two plus three or three plus two.

Is there a qualifier for low in Jersey Holdem?

Yes. As in Omaha hi-lo, a low hand must be five different cards of eight or lower. If no one qualifies, the high hand wins the whole pot.
