Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

This variation of Omaha hi-lo was contributed to pagat.com by Britt Martin. It uses a standard 52-card deck with no wild cards.

1.2

The pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualifying low hand. High hands follow the standard hand rankings.

1.3

For low, aces are low and straights and flushes do not count, so A-2-3-4-5 is the best low hand. A low hand qualifies only if it is eight-high or better.

1.4

Each player is dealt five hole cards, and ten more are used for the board, so the deck allows at most eight players.

Article 2The deal

2.1

Antes or blinds follow the table's usual practice. Each player is dealt five cards face down.

2.2

Ten community cards are dealt face down on the table in two rows of five.

Article 3Betting and turning the rows

3.1

There are six betting rounds. The first takes place before any community card is turned.

3.2

After each of the first five betting rounds, the dealer turns one card face up in each row.

3.3

The sixth and final betting round takes place when all ten community cards are face up.

Article 4Making a hand and the showdown

4.1

Each hand shall use exactly two hole cards and exactly three community cards, and all three community cards must come from the same row.

4.2

High and low are judged separately, so a player may use different hole cards, and a different row, for each half.

4.3

The best high hand wins half the pot and the best qualifying low hand wins the other half. If no low qualifies, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Example

Choosing the row

Row 1: A♠4♥9♦K♣7♠. Row 2: 5♦5♣3♠Q♥J♦.

A player holds 2♥3♣K♦K♠6♥.

High: the two kings with the king, ace and nine from row 1 make three kings. Row 2 offers nothing better.

Low: the two and three with the ace, four and seven from row 1 make 7-4-3-2-A. Row 2 has only two different low ranks, so it cannot make a low with this hand.

Article 5Strategy notes

5.1

Six betting rounds make for large pots. The ability to choose between two rows keeps many hands alive until late in the deal.

5.2

As in any Omaha game, check that a hand really uses exactly two hole cards and three cards from one row; cards from different rows cannot be combined.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

How many community cards are there in Oh Shit poker?

Ten, dealt face down in two rows of five. One card in each row is turned up after each of the first five betting rounds.

Can you use cards from both rows?

No. Your three community cards must all come from the same row, together with exactly two of your five hole cards.

Is there a qualifier for low?

Yes. A low hand must be eight-high or better. Aces count low, and straights and flushes are ignored.
