Article 1Deck, wild cards and hand rankings

1.1

Pregnant Threes is a variant of five-card draw played with a standard 52-card deck.

1.2

All threes, sixes and nines are wild: twelve wild cards in the deck.

1.3

Five of a kind is possible, and with so many wild cards it is not unusual. Unless the dealer announces otherwise, five of a kind is the highest hand, above a straight flush. See hand rankings.

Article 2Antes, the deal and the draw rules

2.1

Each player antes. The dealer deals five cards face down to each player, and there is a first betting round.

2.2

Before the deal, the dealer shall announce:

2.2(a) how many draws there will be;

2.2(b) how many cards a player may exchange at each draw;

2.2(c) whether the draw is optional or mandatory, meaning each player must exchange exactly that number of cards.

2.3

For example, under two draws of three, mandatory, each player must discard exactly three cards at each of two draws, even if that means breaking up a hand of wild cards.

Article 3The draws and betting

3.1

At each draw, players in turn discard the cards they are exchanging, and the dealer deals the same number of replacements.

3.2

A betting round follows each draw.

3.3

After the last draw and its betting round, the showdown follows. The best five-card hand wins the pot.

Example

Three wild cards

A player holds 3♥6♣Q♠Q♦9♦.

The three, six and nine are all wild. With the natural pair of queens, the player has five queens.

Example

A mandatory draw

The game is two draws of three, mandatory. After the deal, a player holds 3♠6♦9♥9♣K♥: four wild cards and a king, already five kings.

The player must still discard three cards, and so gives up at least two wild cards.

Article 4Common variations

4.1

Kill cards. The dealer may add one or more kill cards, such as the king of diamonds (the man with the axe) or a one-eyed jack. A player who receives a kill card is disqualified and their hand is dead. The dealer shall name any kill cards before the deal.

Other draw games with many wild cards include Five Card Draw, deuces wild and Connect Four.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • The most common mistake is overvaluing a hand. With twelve wild cards, five of a kind can win or lose.
  • Under a mandatory draw, a player may have to break up a strong hand, so the draw rules announced by the dealer matter a great deal.
  • Wild cards are the most valuable cards to keep; when a draw is optional, natural cards are usually discarded first.
