Selection / Rejection Rules

Selection / Rejection is a high-low seven-card stud game in which each face-up card is offered to a player, who may accept it or reject it. A rejected card is offered to the next player, and the third player offered a card must take it. After four rounds of up-cards and a final down-card, players declare high, low or both.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Selection / Rejection is played with a standard 52-card deck with no jokers and no wild cards, by up to seven players. It is also known as Want it? Want it? Got it!, occasionally as Polish, and sometimes as Pass the Trash, a name more often used for Anaconda.

1.2

Each player ends with seven cards, three face down and four face up, and makes the best five-card hand. High hands are ranked by the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

The pot is split between the best high hand and the best low hand, according to the players' declarations. The ranking of low hands shall be agreed before play; it is usually ace-to-five, in which aces are low and straights and flushes do not count.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

Each player antes. The dealer deals two cards face down to each player.

2.2

The four face-up cards are then dealt in four dealing rounds, using the offering procedure in Article 3. A seventh card is finally dealt face down to each player, as in seven-card stud.

Article 3Offering, accepting and rejecting

3.1

Each dealing round has a leader. In the first dealing round the leader is the player to the dealer's left. In each later round the leader is the next active player to the left of the previous leader.

3.2

The dealer turns the top card of the deck face up and offers it to the leader, who may accept it or reject it.

3.2(a) If the leader rejects it, the card is offered to the next player to the left.

3.2(b) If that player also rejects it, it is offered to the next player, who must take it.

3.3

Once a card has been taken, the dealer turns up the next card and offers it to the player to the left of the one who took the previous card. That player may accept or reject it in the same way.

3.4

No card may be rejected more than twice. The third player to whom a card is offered must accept it.

3.5

Players who have already received a card in the current dealing round are skipped when cards are offered. Near the end of a round, a rejected card passes to the next player who still needs one, even if that is the player who first rejected it; since no card may be rejected more than twice, the last player without a card will always end up with one.

3.6

When every active player has received one face-up card, the dealing round ends and there is a betting round.

Example

One dealing round

Five players, A to E, sit clockwise with E as the dealer. A leads.

The dealer offers J♥ to A, who rejects it. B also rejects it, so C must take it.

The next card, 9♠, is offered to D, the player to C's left. D accepts it.

The next card, 2♣, is offered to E. E rejects it and it goes to A, who accepts it.

Only B still needs a card. The next card, K♦, is offered to B. If B rejects it, the card comes round to B again, since everyone else has a card, and after a second rejection B must take it. The round ends with a card for every player. In the next round, B is the leader.

4.1

There is a betting round after each of the four dealing rounds, and a final betting round after the seventh card is dealt face down. As usual in stud poker, each round is begun by the player with the best card or hand showing.

Article 5Declaration and showdown

5.1

After the final betting round, each remaining player declares whether they are going for high, low or both. The method of declaring shall be agreed before play; declarations are usually made simultaneously, with chips held in a closed hand.

5.2

The best high hand among the players declaring high and the best low hand among those declaring low split the pot. If no one declares one side, the players on the other side compete for the whole pot.

5.3

A player who declares both usually must win, or tie, both halves. A player who fails wins nothing.

Example

A split pot

Player A holds Q♦Q♠4♣ face down and Q♥8♠8♥2♦ face up: a full house, queens full of eights. A declares high.

Player B holds A♣3♥7♠ face down and 5♦4♠9♣K♥ face up. B's best low is 7-5-4-3-A. B declares low.

Player C holds 10♣9♦6♥ face down and 6♠7♦8♦3♣ face up. C's best low is 9-8-7-6-3 (C's straight, six to ten, would lose to A's full house for high). C declares low.

A wins the high half. B's 7-5-4-3-A beats C's 9-8-7-6-3, so B wins the low half.

Article 6Strategy notes

6.1

Rejecting a card sends it to your left-hand neighbour. Rejecting a card that would help them can cost you as much as accepting a poor card.

6.2

The third player offered a card has no choice, so the value of rejecting depends on who is next in line.

Article 7Frequently asked questions

How many times can a card be rejected in Selection / Rejection?

Twice at most. The third player offered the card must take it.

What is Want it? Want it? Got it!?

It is another name for Selection / Rejection, taken from the way each card is offered: the first two players can say no, and the third player gets it.

Is Selection / Rejection high-low?

Yes. After the last betting round players declare high, low or both, and the pot is split between the best high and the best low.
