Slam-aha Rules

Slam-aha is an Omaha-style high-low game. Each player gets five cards, and nine community cards are laid in a cross: a row of five and a column of five sharing the centre card. Each hand uses exactly two cards from the player's hand and exactly three cards from one line of the cross, and the pot is split between high and an eight-or-better low.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Slam-aha is listed on pagat.com as a variant of Oh Shit, an Omaha variation contributed there by Britt Martin. It is played exactly like Oh Shit except for the shape of the board. A standard 52-card deck is used, so up to eight players can take part.

1.2

The pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualifying low hand.

1.3

For low, aces are low and straights and flushes do not count against a hand, so A-2-3-4-5 is the best low. A low hand must be eight-high or better to qualify. See hand rankings.

1.4

Groups may agree before play to make the centre card of the cross wild. Otherwise there are no wild cards.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

Each player antes, or blinds are posted, as agreed. The dealer deals five cards face down to each player.

2.2

The dealer lays nine community cards face down in a cross: a horizontal row of five and a vertical column of five, which cross at a single shared centre card.

Centre
Figure 2.1The cross of nine community cards, a row and a column of five that share the centre card; one card of each line is turned before each of rounds 2 to 5, and the centre is turned last.

Article 3Betting and revealing the cross

RoundBefore the round
1All nine community cards face down
2One card of the row and one of the column face up
3Two of each line face up
4Three of each line face up
5Four of each line face up; only the centre is hidden
6The centre card face up
3.1

There are six betting rounds. After each of the first four, the dealer turns up one card from the row and one from the column, never the centre.

3.2

After the fifth betting round, the centre card is turned up, and the sixth and final betting round follows.

Article 4Making hands and the showdown

4.1

Each hand must use exactly two cards from the player's own five and exactly three community cards, all from the same line (the row or the column). The centre card belongs to both lines.

4.2

A player may use different cards, and a different line, for high and for low.

4.3

If no hand qualifies for low, the usual practice is that the best high hand takes the whole pot.

4.4

The source does not call for a declaration, so the usual practice is that the cards speak. If the centre card is played wild, the dealer shall announce before the deal whether it may count as an ace for low and where five of a kind ranks.

Example

Separate high and low hands

Row, left to right: 4♦7♠3♣K♥2♥. Column, top to bottom: Q♦9♣3♣5♠A♠. The three of clubs is the centre card, shared by both lines. No card is wild.

A player holds A♥2♣8♦K♠6♥.

High: K♠2♣ from hand with K♥2♥7♠ from the row make kings and twos, with a seven.

Low: A♥6♥ from hand with 4♦3♣2♥ from the row make 6-4-3-2-A, a qualifying low.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • As in Omaha Hi-Lo, you must use exactly two of your own cards, so a hand full of one rank or one suit is weaker than it looks.
  • The centre card sits in both lines and is revealed last, so it can change both lines at once.
  • An ace and a two in hand are the strongest start for low.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

How many cards from your hand must you use in Slam-aha?

Exactly two, together with exactly three community cards from a single line of the cross.

Is the middle card wild in Slam-aha?

Only if the group agrees before the deal. The game may be played with the centre card wild or not.

What is the difference between Slam-aha and Oh Shit?

Oh Shit uses ten community cards in two rows of five. Slam-aha uses nine in a cross, where the row and the column share the centre card.
