Trees Rules

Trees is a five-card game in which, instead of drawing from the deck, players improve their hands by trading cards with one another. After a first betting round, any two players may agree to swap an equal number of cards face down. When no more trades can be agreed, there is a final betting round and the best high hand wins.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Trees is played with a standard 52-card deck with no jokers and no wild cards. The best five-card high hand at the showdown wins the pot. Hands are ranked by the standard poker hand rankings.

1.2

The game was described in The Game Report. The method of trading in Article 3 was suggested by John McLeod on pagat.com, because the original description did not say exactly how trades are carried out.

Article 2Antes, the deal and first betting round

2.1

Each player antes. The dealer deals five cards face down to each player, one at a time.

2.2

Players look at their cards and there is a betting round, as in five-card draw.

Article 3Trading

3.1

After the first betting round, active players may trade cards freely with one another. There is no draw from the deck.

3.2

In every trade, each player shall give the same number of cards as they receive, so every player always holds five cards.

3.3

Two players who wish to trade first agree how many cards to exchange. Each then chooses that number of cards from their hand and places them face down on the table at the same time. The cards are then exchanged without being shown to anyone else.

3.4

Trading continues, between any pairs of active players, until no more trades can be agreed.

Example

A two-card trade

Player A holds K♠K♥8♦4♣2♥ and Player B holds 9♣9♦J♠6♠3♠.

A and B agree to trade two cards. A puts down 4♣2♥ and B puts down J♠6♠, face down, and they swap.

A now holds K♠K♥8♦J♠6♠: still a pair of kings. B now holds 9♣9♦3♠4♣2♥: still a pair of nines. Neither player has improved, and each has learned only what the other gave away.

Article 4Final betting and showdown

StageWhat happens
DealFive cards face down to each player
Betting round 1Begun as in five-card draw
TradingEqual-number trades between pairs of players, until no more are agreed
Betting round 2Final betting round
ShowdownBest high hand wins
4.1

When trading ends, there is a final betting round, followed by a showdown in which the highest hand wins the pot.

4.2

If all but one player folds in either betting round, the remaining player wins the pot without showing.

Article 5Notes and variations

5.1

Nothing in the rules limits how many trades a player may make or how many cards may change hands in one trade, provided the numbers are equal. A group may agree limits before play.

5.2

Because every card comes from another player's hand, a trade that helps you may also help your trading partner. Watching who trades with whom, and how many cards change hands, gives clues about the other hands.
