Z Rules

In Z, each player is dealt five cards face down and four shared cards are laid out in the shape of the letter Z. The shared cards are turned up one at a time, with betting after each. At showdown each player uses exactly three of their own cards and two adjacent cards from the Z, and the pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualifying low.

Article 1Players, deck and layout

1.1

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck without jokers. High hands are ranked according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.2

Four shared cards are dealt face down in a Z shape: two cards side by side on the top row, and two on the bottom row, shifted one place to the right so that the second top card sits directly above the first bottom card. Each position is numbered to show the order in which it is turned up:

1.3

Two cards are adjacent if they touch along the Z. There are three adjacent pairs: 1 and 3, 3 and 4, and 4 and 2.

Article 2Antes, the deal and betting

2.1

Each player places an agreed ante before the deal. Each betting round begins with the first active player to the dealer's left.

2.2

Each player is dealt five cards face down. The dealer then lays out the four shared cards face down in the Z.

2.3

There is a betting round after the deal. The shared cards are then turned face up in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, with a betting round after each: five betting rounds in all.

2.4

If all but one player folds at any point, the remaining player wins the pot without showing their cards.

Article 3Showdown and splitting the pot

3.1

Each hand consists of exactly five cards: exactly three of the player's own cards and one adjacent pair of shared cards (1.3). A player may not use more or fewer than three of their own cards.

3.2

The game is played high-low without a declaration; the cards speak. Half the pot goes to the best high hand and half to the best low hand.

3.3

Low hands are ranked ace-to-five: aces are low, and straights and flushes are ignored, so the best low is 5-4-3-2-A. A low hand qualifies only if it has five different ranks and its highest card is an 8 or lower.

3.4

If no player has a qualifying low hand, the best high hand wins the whole pot.

3.5

A player's high and low hands are chosen independently. The same player may use one adjacent pair for high and a different pair for low, and may win both halves.

3.6

Identical hands split the relevant half of the pot.

Example

High and low from different pairs

The Z: top row K♠K♦ (positions 1 and 3); bottom row 5♣2♥ (positions 4 and 2).

Player A holds K♥9♣9♦3♠4♦. Using pair 1-3 with K♥9♣9♦, Player A has a full house, kings full of nines. Player A's best low uses pair 4-2 with 3♠4♦9♣, which is 9-5-4-3-2 and does not qualify.

Player B holds A♥3♣6♦Q♠Q♣. Using pair 4-2 with A♥3♣6♦, Player B has 6-5-3-2-A, a qualifying low. Player B's best high uses pair 1-3 with Q♠Q♣A♥: two pair, kings and queens.

Player A wins the high half with the full house and Player B wins the low half.

Article 4Common variations

  • With a declaration. Z may be played with each player declaring high, low or both. A player who declares both must use the same adjacent pair for both hands.

Z reverses the hand structure of Omaha Hi-Lo: three cards from the hand and two from the board, instead of two and three. Other layout games include Iron Cross, Criss Cross, Elevator and Pyramid.

Article 5Frequently asked questions

How many hole cards must you use in Z poker?

Exactly three of your five, together with two adjacent cards from the Z. You cannot use four of your own cards, or only two.

Which board cards can be used together in Z?

Only adjacent pairs: the two top cards, the top-right card with the bottom-left card below it, or the two bottom cards. The first and last cards of the Z can never be used together.

Does Z need a qualifying low?

Yes. A low hand must be 8-high or better under ace-to-five ranking. If no one qualifies, the best high hand takes the whole pot.
