Blind Hold'em Rules

Blind Hold'em is Texas Hold'em without the betting. Every player pays the same fixed stake, receives two hole cards and shares a five-card board, and nobody can fold. The player with the best five-card hand from their seven cards takes the whole pot.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Blind Hold'em is one of a group of fixed-stake games contributed to pagat.com by Ilya Bugreyev. They were first published on the Pokerlistings website, whose blog attributes them to Mikolaj Domanski.

1.2

The game uses a standard 52-card deck with no jokers and no wild cards. Hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

The object is to hold the best five-card poker hand at the end of the deal. Because there is no betting, no player can fold or win the pot by bluffing. The result depends entirely on the cards.

1.4

Any number of players from two upwards may take part. Each player needs two cards and the board needs five, so a single deck is enough for up to 23 players.

Article 2The stake and the deal

2.1

Before the deal, every player puts the same agreed fixed stake into the pot. There are no blinds, antes, bets, calls or raises beyond this stake.

2.2

The dealer deals two cards face down to each player, one at a time, clockwise. These are the hole cards.

2.3

The dealer then deals five community cards face up to the centre of the table. These form the board, which every player shares.

2.4

Every player stays in until the end. There is no option to fold.

Article 3Revealing the cards

3.1

Once the board is complete, every player turns their two hole cards face up.

3.2

To add suspense, the table may reveal the cards in stages instead, for example:

3.2(a) the first three board cards (the flop) are dealt, then each player turns one hole card face up;

3.2(b) the fourth board card (the turn) is dealt, then each player turns their second hole card face up;

3.2(c) the fifth board card (the river) is dealt.

3.3

The order of revealing has no effect on the result, since no decisions are made. The dealer shall announce the method before the deal.

Article 4Showdown and splitting the pot

4.1

Each player makes the best five-card hand from their two hole cards and the five board cards. A player may use both, one or neither of their hole cards, as in Texas Hold'em.

4.2

The player with the best hand takes the whole pot.

4.3

If two or more players tie for the best hand, they share the pot equally. Suits never break a tie.

Example

The best seven-card hand wins

Board: Q♥J♦7♠7♣2♥

Player A holds 7♦3♣. With the two sevens on the board, A has three sevens: 7-7-7-Q-J.

Player B holds Q♠J♣. B has queens and jacks, with the board's pair of sevens as a third pair. B's best five cards are Q-Q-J-J-7, two pair.

Three of a kind beats two pair, so Player A takes the pot.

Article 5Related fixed-stake games

The same group of fixed-stake games includes:

  • Blind Omaha: four unseen cards each, revealed in stages, and exactly two must be used.
  • Estonian Twist: players see three cards, pass one to the left and discard one, so there are real decisions to make.
  • Crazy Dutchy: as Estonian Twist, but with three separate boards.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

Is there any skill in Blind Hold'em?

No. Every player pays the same stake and stays in to the end, and there are no betting decisions. The best hand after the board is dealt wins, so it is a game of pure chance.

Can you fold in Blind Hold'em?

No. There are no betting rounds, so nobody folds, calls or raises. Everyone's cards are compared at the end.

Do you have to use both hole cards?

No. As in Texas Hold'em, your hand is the best five cards from your two hole cards and the five board cards, using both, one or neither of your own cards.
