Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Crazy Dutchy is one of a group of fixed-stake games contributed to pagat.com by Ilya Bugreyev. They were first published on the Pokerlistings website, whose blog attributes them to Mikolaj Domanski. It extends Estonian Twist from one board to three.

1.2

The game uses a standard 52-card deck with no jokers and no wild cards. Hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

Each player needs three cards and the three boards need fifteen, so a single deck is enough for up to twelve players.

1.4

The object is to win at least two of the three boards.

Article 2The stake and the deal

2.1

Before the deal, every player puts the same agreed fixed stake into the pot. There are no betting rounds, and no player may fold.

2.2

The dealer deals three cards face down to each player. Each player may look at their own cards but shall not show them to anyone else.

2.3

The dealer then deals three separate flops of three cards each, face up in the centre of the table.

Article 3Passing, discarding and completing the boards

StepWhat happens
1Three cards dealt to each player; three flops dealt
2Each player passes one card to the left (3.1)
3Each player discards one card, keeping two
4One turn card dealt face up to each flop
5One river card dealt face up to each flop, completing three five-card boards
3.1

The pass. Each player chooses one of their three cards and places it face down in front of the player on their left. The pass is simultaneous: no player picks up the card passed to them until every player has placed a card.

3.2

The discard. Each player then discards one of their three cards face down, keeping two hole cards.

Article 4Deciding the boards and the pot

4.1

Each board is decided separately. On each board, each player makes the best five-card hand from that board's five cards and their own two hole cards, using both, one or neither hole card.

4.2

A player who wins two of the three boards takes the pot.

4.3

A player who wins all three boards takes a double pot: every player pays a second fixed stake into the pot for the winner.

4.4

If no player wins more than one board, the players who won one board each settle the tie between them, for example by each drawing a card from the shuffled deck. The dealer shall announce the method before the deal.

4.5

The source does not cover a tie on an individual board. The dealer shall announce before the deal how such a board is scored.

Example

Two boards out of three

Board 1: A♠K♦7♣7♥2♠ · Board 2: Q♥J♥4♦9♠3♣ · Board 3: 10♣8♣5♥6♦K♠

After passing and discarding, A holds 7♦10♥, B holds Q♠Q♣ and C holds 9♥9♣.

Board 1: A has three sevens, B has queens and sevens, C has nines and sevens. A wins.

Board 2: B has three queens and C has three nines. B wins.

Board 3: B's pair of queens beats C's pair of nines and A's pair of tens. B wins.

B has won two boards and takes the pot.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • The card passed to the left can help that player on any of the three boards, so a card that fits one of the flops well is usually a poor card to pass.
  • Hole cards count on all three boards at once. A pair, or cards that match more than one flop, gives the best chance of winning two boards.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

How do you win Crazy Dutchy?

Win two of the three boards. Winning all three earns a double pot, with every player paying a second stake.

Is there betting in Crazy Dutchy?

No. Everyone pays a fixed stake before the deal and stays in to the end. The skill lies in choosing which card to pass and which to discard.

What happens if three players each win one board?

The board winners settle the tie between themselves, for example by each drawing a card from the deck.
