Diablo Rules

Diablo is five-card draw with deuces wild, in which no player may draw more than two cards. The player who opens the betting must either win the pot or pay an amount equal to it into a new pot. Deals continue, without fresh antes, until the opener wins.

Article 1Players, deck and wild cards

1.1

Diablo is played with a standard 52-card deck. The four twos are wild, as in Five Card Draw Deuces Wild.

1.2

A deuce may stand for any card, but it may not duplicate a card already in the hand except to make five of a kind. Five of a kind is the highest hand and beats a straight flush. See hand rankings.

1.3

Except as set out on this page, the rules of Five Card Draw apply.

Article 2Antes, deal and opening

2.1

Before the first deal every player places the agreed ante in the pot. Each player is dealt five cards face down.

2.2

The first betting round begins with the player to the dealer's left. The player who makes the first bet is the opener.

2.3

The published rules do not set an opening requirement or say what happens if no one bets. The dealer shall announce both before the deal.

Article 3The draw and second betting round

3.1

After the first betting round, each active player in turn may discard and replace no more than two cards.

3.2

A second betting round and a showdown follow, as in Five Card Draw.

Article 4Win or match

This rule gives the game its name and its danger.

4.1

If the opener wins the pot, the Diablo round ends.

4.2

If any other player wins the pot, the opener shall pay into the centre a new pot equal to the pot just won.

4.3

The deal then passes to the left and a new hand is played for the new pot. No one antes for this hand.

4.4

This continues, deal after deal, until a hand in which the opener wins the pot.

4.5

In a dealer's choice game, when the opener finally wins, the deal passes to the player to the left of the one who called Diablo, who then chooses the next game.

Example

The opener has to match

The pot stands at 60. Player A opens, and after the betting the pot reaches 160. Player B wins with K♥K♦2♠7♣4♦, three kings using the deuce, against A's two pairs.

B takes the 160. A must now put 160 into the centre as a new pot. The deal passes left, no one antes, and the next hand is played for that 160.

Article 5Variations and notes

  • Capped pot. Because an opener who keeps losing can face very large payments, some groups put a fixed limit on the new pot an opener must create.
  • Opening with care. With four wild cards in the deck and a two-card draw limit, strong hands are common, so opening a weak hand carries a real risk of having to match the pot.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

What happens if the opener loses in Diablo?

The opener must pay an amount equal to the pot just won into a new pot. The deal passes left and the new pot is played for without antes. This repeats until the opener wins.

How many cards can you draw in Diablo?

No more than two.

Are deuces wild in Diablo?

Yes. All four twos are wild, and five of a kind is the best hand.
