Five-card Open Draw (Sequential) Rules

In sequential Five-card Open Draw, players discard one card at a time. After each round of discards, all the discards are turned face up, and another round begins. Once a player passes they may not discard again. When everyone has passed, each player receives replacements for all the cards they discarded.

Article 1Origin and objective

1.1

Open-discard draw poker was devised by Bruce Leban, as published on pagat.com. The sequential version lets players see opponents' discards before deciding on their own.

1.2

The game uses a standard 52-card deck with no wild cards. The best five-card high hand wins, ranked by the standard poker hand rankings. Other matters follow Five Card Draw.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

Antes or blinds are posted and each player is dealt five cards face down.

2.2

The source does not fix the betting rounds. The usual practice, as in Five Card Draw, is a betting round after the deal and a final betting round after the replacement cards are dealt. Groups may add a betting round after each round of discards (see 3.5).

Article 3Rounds of discarding

StepAction
1Going round the table, each player discards one card face down, or passes
2All discards from that round are turned face up
3Repeat, with players who have passed taking no further part in discarding
4When every player passes in the same round, all discards are replaced
3.1

Starting with the first player to act, each player in turn either discards one card face down or passes.

3.2

When every player has had a turn, all the cards discarded in that round are turned face up in front of the players who discarded them.

3.3

Further rounds follow in the same way. Players may change their plans in light of the discards they have seen.

3.4

A player who passes may not discard in any later round. Discarding ends when every player has passed.

3.4(a) The reason for this rule is that otherwise the last player to act could pass round after round, watch everyone else's discards, and commit only at the end.

3.5

By agreement, a betting round may be held after each round of discards.

3.6

When discarding has ended, each player receives, face down, as many new cards as they discarded, restoring their hand to five cards. A betting round and the showdown follow.

3.7

The source sets no maximum number of discards. If the group wants a limit, the dealer shall announce it before the deal.

Example

Two rounds of discarding

In the first round, Player A discards the 3♣, Player B discards the K♥, and Player C passes. The two discards are turned up. C may not discard again.

B threw away a king, so A, who holds K♠K♦9♥9♣ after the first discard, knows one fewer king is available. In the second round A passes and B discards the Q♥. In the third round B passes, and discarding ends.

A receives one new card and B receives two. C receives none.

Article 5Frequently asked questions

Can you discard again after passing in sequential open draw?

No. Once you pass, you take no further part in the discarding. This stops the last player from waiting to see everyone else's discards.

When do you get replacement cards in sequential open draw?

Only after discarding has finished for everyone. Each player then receives one new card for every card they discarded.
