Five-card Open Draw (Simple) Rules

Five-card Open Draw is standard Five Card Draw with one change: once everyone has drawn, all the discards are turned face up. Before the final betting round, every player can see which cards each opponent threw away.

Article 1Origin and objective

1.1

Open-discard draw poker was devised by Bruce Leban, as published on pagat.com. His aim was to give players more information to bet on than ordinary draw poker provides.

1.2

Except as set out on this page, the rules of Five Card Draw apply: a standard 52-card deck, no wild cards, and the best five-card high hand under the standard poker hand rankings wins.

Article 2Antes, the deal and the first betting round

2.1

Antes or blinds are posted and each player is dealt five cards face down, as in Five Card Draw.

2.2

A betting round follows the deal.

Article 3The open draw

3.1

Each remaining player in turn discards any cards they wish and receives the same number of replacements, as in Five Card Draw. Any limit on the number of cards drawn follows the group's usual draw rules.

3.2

Each player's discards shall be kept separate and in front of that player, so that everyone can tell whose they are.

3.3

When every player has discarded, all the discards are turned face up.

3.4

The second and final betting round then takes place, followed by the showdown.

Example

Reading an opponent's discards

Player A discards three cards, which are turned up as A♠K♦Q♣. A threw away an ace, a king and a queen, so A is unlikely to be holding a pair of any of those ranks, and has probably kept a smaller pair.

Player B, who stood pat, holds J♥J♦J♣5♠2♥. Knowing that A did not keep aces, kings or queens, B can bet the three jacks with more confidence than in ordinary draw poker.

Article 4Showdown and related games

4.1

The showdown follows the rules of Five Card Draw. The best five-card hand wins the pot.

The same open-discard idea is used in other games by the same author:
