Jackpot Poker Rules

Jackpot Poker is like Five Card Draw, but the draw has no fixed end. Players keep exchanging one card at a time with the deck until someone is happy with their hand and calls. Then everyone bets and the best hand wins.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

Jackpot Poker was contributed to pagat.com by Matt Molver. It is a variant of Five Card Draw, and it should not be confused with Jackpots, an old name for Jacks or Better.

1.2

It uses a standard 52-card deck. Twos may be played as wild cards by agreement. The best five-card high hand wins, ranked by the standard poker hand rankings.

1.3

If twos are wild, five of a kind is possible. The source does not rank it; the usual practice is that five of a kind beats a straight flush, and the group shall confirm this before play.

Article 2Antes and the deal

2.1

Each player antes, as in Five Card Draw, and is dealt five cards face down.

2.2

The rest of the deck is placed face down in the centre of the table, and players look at their cards.

Article 3Exchanging cards

3.1

A player may place one unwanted card face down on a discard pile beside the deck and take the top card of the deck in its place. Exchanges are always one card for one card.

3.2

Exchanges continue until a player is satisfied with their hand and announces "I call". This ends the exchanging.

3.3

The source does not say whether players exchange in strict rotation. To keep the game fair, the group shall agree before the deal; taking turns clockwise from the dealer's left, one card per turn, is the simplest method.

3.4

The source does not say what happens if the deck runs out. The group shall agree this before play, for example by shuffling the discard pile to form a new deck.

Article 4Betting and showdown

4.1

After the call, there is a round of betting, followed by a showdown among the players who remain. The best hand wins the pot.

Example

Building a full house one card at a time

Player A starts with 9♠9♦5♣3♥K♦. A exchanges the 3♥ and receives the 9♥. On a later turn A exchanges the 5♣ and receives the K♠.

A now holds 9-9-9-K-K, a full house, and says "I call". After the betting, Player B shows A♥J♥8♥6♥3♠, four hearts with no flush, and loses to A's full house.

Article 5Strategy notes

  • Calling early stops opponents from improving further, but gives up the chance to improve your own hand.
  • Each exchange replaces only one card, so drawing to a hand that needs several cards takes many turns.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

How many cards can you exchange in Jackpot Poker?

One at a time, as often as you like, until a player calls.
