Low Chicago Rules

Low Chicago is seven-card stud in which the pot is split between the best high poker hand and the lowest spade held face down. Aces count high, so the two of spades in the hole is the best possible spade. It is played exactly like Chicago except for the spade that wins.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck without jokers. There are no wild cards.

1.2

The pot is split between two winners:

1.2(a) the player with the best five-card high hand, ranked by the standard poker hand rankings; and

1.2(b) the player with the lowest spade.

1.3

For the spade half, aces count high. The two of spades is therefore the lowest spade and the ace of spades the highest.

1.4

Low Chicago is not a lowball game. The low half of the pot goes to a single low spade, not to the lowest poker hand.

Article 2The deal and betting

2.1

The deal, the betting and the declaration follow Chicago, which uses the seven-card stud deal: two cards down and one up, three more up, and a last card down.

Fifth1 upThird

2.2

As in Chicago, the spade shall be held face down to count. Spades dealt face up do not compete for the spade half. The dealer shall confirm this before the deal if the group plays otherwise.

Article 3Declaration and showdown

3.1

After the final betting round, each remaining player declares for the high hand, the spade, or both, in the manner agreed before play.

3.2

A player must hold a qualifying spade to win the spade half. A player who declares both wins only if they hold both the best hand and the lowest spade.

Example

The lowest hole spade

The two of spades is dealt face up to Player C, so it does not count.

Player A holds 5♠ in the hole and Player B holds 3♠ in the hole. B has the lowest spade in play and wins the spade half. If the 2♠ had been in C's hole cards, C would have won it.

Article 4Variations

4.1

Ace low. Some groups count the ace of spades as the lowest spade. The dealer shall announce this before the deal; the standard rule is aces high.

4.2

San Francisco. The same game is sometimes played with hearts instead of spades. In Low San Francisco, the high hand splits the pot with the lowest heart; in High San Francisco, with the highest heart.

For the high-spade version, see Chicago. See also High-Low Chicago.

Article 5Frequently asked questions

What is the best card in Low Chicago?

The two of spades in the hole. Aces count high for the spade half, so the two is the lowest spade and cannot be beaten.

Is Low Chicago a lowball game?

No. The best high poker hand wins half the pot. The other half goes to the lowest spade, not to the lowest hand.

What is the difference between Chicago and Low Chicago?

In Chicago the highest spade in the hole wins half the pot. In Low Chicago the lowest spade does. Everything else is the same.
