Lowball Rules

Lowball is poker in which the lowest hand wins. The name usually means a low version of five-card draw: each player gets five cards, bets, exchanges cards and bets again, and the lowest hand at showdown takes the pot. The main forms differ in the low ranking used (ace-to-five, deuce-to-seven or ace-to-six), the number of draws, and whether a joker is added.

Article 1What lowball is

1.1

In lowball the object is to win the pot by holding the lowest five-card hand at showdown, or by making a bet that no other player calls.

1.2

Most poker games can be played for low, but the name lowball most often refers to low Five Card Draw. The stud game played for low is usually called Razz, and there is also Five Card Stud Lowball.

1.3

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck, with one joker added in some forms (see 2.4).

1.4

The name Lowball is occasionally used for Jacks Back, a jacks-or-better draw game that is played for low when no one can open.

Article 2Low hand rankings

Every form of lowball agrees that pairs are bad: a hand with five different ranks always beats a hand with a pair, when straights and flushes are not in play. The forms differ on the ace and on straights and flushes.

RankingAcesStraights and flushesBest hand
Ace-to-fiveLowIgnored5-4-3-2-A
Deuce-to-sevenHighCount against you7-5-4-3-2, not all one suit
Ace-to-sixLowCount against you6-4-3-2-A, not all one suit
2.1

Two unpaired hands are compared by their highest card first; the lower card wins. If the highest cards are equal, the next highest are compared, and so on. A hand is named by its highest card, so 8-6-4-3-2 is an eight-low.

2.2

Where a hand contains pairs, one pair beats two pairs, two pairs beat three of a kind, and so on, following the high ranking in reverse. Where straights and flushes count, they are ranked in their normal high-poker places, so they are bad hands for low.

2.3

Suits have no rank. Hands with the same ranks tie and split the pot.

2.4

The joker. Ace-to-five lowball is often played with a joker, which acts as a bug: it counts as the lowest rank missing from the holder's hand. Deuce-to-seven is normally played without a joker.

2.5

See hand rankings for the full orders.

Example

One hand, three rankings

A player holds 5♣4♦3♠2♥A♣.

Ace-to-five: the best possible hand.

Ace-to-six: a straight, which is worse than any hand with a pair.

Deuce-to-seven: the ace is high and A-2-3-4-5 is not a straight, so this is an ace-high hand with no pair, weaker than any king-high.

Article 3Forced bets and the deal

3.1

Lowball may be played with antes, but formal games more often use blinds. The blind structure varies between forms and venues and shall be announced before play; see the page for each form.

3.2

Blinds count as bets, and a player who posted a big blind may raise when the action returns to them even if everyone else has only called.

3.3

Each player is dealt five cards face down, one at a time, starting with the player to the dealer's left. A betting round follows.

Article 4Drawing and betting

4.1

In each draw, the remaining players in turn, starting from the dealer's left, may discard any number of cards and receive the same number of replacements, or stand pat.

4.2

Each draw is followed by a betting round. After the last betting round, if two or more players remain, there is a showdown and the lowest hand wins.

4.3

In games with several draws the deck may run out. The discards are then shuffled and cut to form a new deck for the players still waiting to draw.

4.4

If all but one player folds at any point, the remaining player wins the pot without showing their cards.

Kansas City LowballDeuce-to-seven12
Ace-to-Six LowballAce-to-six12
Double DrawAny, as agreed23
Triple DrawUsually deuce-to-seven; ace-to-five also played34
5.1

Kansas City Lowball is also called Deuce-to-Seven Single Draw, or Billy Baxter Lowball after a player who won the world championship in the game several times.

5.2

California Lowball is sometimes played with the betting sevens rule, which penalises a player who checks a seven-low or better after the draw. See Ace-to-Five Lowball.

5.3

Some split-pot triple draw games used in mixed games pair a low hand with another ranking, for example Archie (high and ace-to-five low). See also Badugi and mixed games.

Article 6Strategy notes

  • In single-draw lowball it is seldom worth drawing more than one card. A player who draws two to three unpaired cards will pair about 40% of the time.
  • However low the three cards kept, drawing two gives no better than about a one-in-four chance of making a nine-low or better.
  • This is why multi-draw forms exist: with several draws a player can draw more cards early, but by the last draw will usually stand pat or draw one.
Example

A pair loses to any unpaired hand

Ace-to-five lowball. Player A holds K♠Q♦J♣10♥9♠. Player B holds 2♦2♣3♥4♠5♦.

Player A's hand is only a king-low, but it has no pair. Player B's cards are very low but contain a pair of twos. Any unpaired hand beats any paired hand, so Player A wins.

Article 7Frequently asked questions

What is the best hand in lowball?

It depends on the ranking. In ace-to-five it is 5-4-3-2-A. In deuce-to-seven it is 7-5-4-3-2 not all of one suit. In ace-to-six it is 6-4-3-2-A not all of one suit.

Does a pair beat no pair in lowball?

No. In lowball a pair is bad, so any hand with five different ranks beats any hand with a pair, as long as straights and flushes are not involved.

Do straights count in lowball?

In ace-to-five (California) lowball, no. In deuce-to-seven and ace-to-six lowball, yes, and they count against you.

How many cards can you draw in lowball?

You may usually draw any number of cards, but in practice players rarely draw more than one or two, because each extra card increases the chance of pairing.
