Ace-to-Six Lowball Rules

Ace-to-Six Lowball is five-card draw in which the lowest hand wins. Aces count low, but straights and flushes count as made hands and are bad for low, so 5-4-3-2-A is a straight and the best hand is 6-4-3-2-A of mixed suits. It was historically known as London Lowball and is played mainly in home games.

Also known as London Lowball (draw), A-6 Lowball

Article 1Objective and equipment

1.1

The object of the game is to win the pot, either by holding the lowest five-card hand at showdown under the ranking in Article 2, or by making a bet that no other player calls.

1.2

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck. Every player's hand is the five cards they hold; there are no community cards.

1.3

Ace-to-six lowball is seldom offered in public cardrooms on the American West Coast or online, but is widely played in home games, particularly on the American East Coast and in Europe. The same ranking is used in the stud game London Lowball.

Article 2Ace-to-six hand rankings

2.1

Aces count low. A pair of aces is normally the lowest, and so the best, pair.

2.2

Straights and flushes count as they do in high poker, and so they are bad hands for low. A straight ranks above (is worse than) three of a kind, and a flush is worse than a straight, following the standard order of hand rankings turned upside down.

2.3

Because 5-4-3-2-A is a straight, the best possible hand is 6-4-3-2-A, provided the five cards are not all of one suit.

2.4

Unpaired hands that are neither straights nor flushes are compared from the highest card down; the lower card wins at the first difference.

2.5

Because the ace is low, A-K-Q-J-10 is normally not a straight but a king-high hand, though some groups treat it as one. Players shall agree this, and whether A-A is the lowest pair, before play.

Example

A wheel is a straight

Player A holds 5♣4♦3♠2♥A♣. Player B holds K♠K♦7♣4♥2♠.

In ace-to-five lowball Player A would hold the best possible hand. In ace-to-six, Player A's cards form a straight, which ranks worse than any pair. Player B's pair of kings is the lower hand, so Player B wins.

Example

Comparing the best hands

Player A holds 6♥4♣3♦2♠A♥. Player B holds 6♦5♠3♣2♦A♠.

Both are six-lows. The next highest cards are compared: Player A's 4 against Player B's 5. Player A has the lower hand and wins. Had all five of Player A's cards been hearts, it would have been a flush and would have lost.

Article 3Forced bets, the deal and the first betting round

3.1

The game follows the procedure of Five Card Draw with the lowball ranking. It may be played with antes or with blinds, and the betting structure shall be agreed before play.

3.2

Each player is dealt five cards face down, one at a time, starting with the player to the dealer's left.

3.3

There is a betting round. With antes it begins with the player to the dealer's left; with blinds it begins with the player to the left of the blinds. No minimum hand is needed to open.

Article 4The draw

4.1

Each remaining player in turn, starting from the dealer's left, may discard any number of cards and receive the same number of replacements, or stand pat.

4.2

Most players draw no more than one card. Drawing two or more makes a pair likely, and in this game a draw can also complete an unwanted straight or flush.

Article 5Second betting round and showdown

5.1

A second betting round follows the draw. If more than one player remains after it, there is a showdown.

5.2

The lowest hand under the ranking in Article 2 wins the pot. Suits have no rank, and identical hands split the pot.

5.3

If all but one player folds at any point, the remaining player wins the pot without showing their cards.

Article 7Frequently asked questions

What is the best hand in ace-to-six lowball?

6-4-3-2-A, as long as the cards are not all the same suit. 5-4-3-2-A is a straight in this game and counts against you.

Is a wheel good in ace-to-six lowball?

What is the difference between ace-to-five and ace-to-six lowball?

In both, aces are low. In ace-to-five, straights and flushes are ignored; in ace-to-six they count as made hands, which are bad for low.

Why is ace-to-six called London lowball?

London Lowball is a traditional name for low poker played with ace-to-six ranking. The name is also used for the seven-card stud version of the game.
