More or Less Rules

More or Less is seven-card stud played for low, like razz, with one twist: kings, queens and jacks count as zero and do not pair with each other. The lowest possible hand is therefore five picture cards, and the lowest hand at the showdown wins the whole pot.

Article 1Players, deck and objective

1.1

More or Less was contributed to pagat.com by Les Stanwood. It is a seven-card stud lowball game using ace-to-five low rankings, as in razz.

1.2

The game uses a standard 52-card deck with no wild cards. Each player makes the lowest five-card hand they can from their seven cards.

1.3

Under ace-to-five ranking, aces are low, and straights and flushes do not count against a hand.

1.4

Picture cards. Every king, queen and jack counts as zero. Zeros rank below aces. Zeros never form pairs: two kings, or a king and a queen, count simply as two zeros.

Article 2Antes, the deal and betting

2.1

Antes and betting limits are set by the house or the dealer. The deal and betting rounds are as in seven-card stud.

Fourth street1 face upSecond round
Fifth street1 face upThird round
Sixth street1 face upFourth round
Seventh street1 face downFinal round
2.2

The source does not fix who opens each betting round. The dealer shall announce this before the deal. Remember that a face-up picture card is the lowest card showing, not the highest.

Article 3Ranking low hands

3.1

Hands without a pair beat hands with a pair. Two hands without a pair are compared by their highest card first, then the next highest, and so on. A zero is lower than any other card.

3.2

A hand with fewer picture cards is not necessarily worse. What matters is the highest-ranking card that is not a zero. For example, K-Q-J-10-9 is a ten-high hand, so it loses to 8-7-6-4-3, an eight-high hand.

3.3

When two hands are equal down to the last card that is not a zero, the hand with a zero where the other has an ace or higher card wins. So 7-4-3-Q-J beats 7-4-3-A-K, because after the 7, 4 and 3 it has two zeros against an ace and a zero.

3.4

The best possible hand is five picture cards, which counts as 0-0-0-0-0.

Article 4Showdown

4.1

After the final betting round, the remaining players show their hands. The lowest five-card hand wins the pot. If two hands are exactly equal, the pot is split.

Example

Picture cards at the showdown

Player A holds Q♣8♦K♥7♠7♣J♦3♥. Player B holds A♠2♦4♣6♥6♠9♣10♦.

A's best hand is K-Q-J-7-3, which counts as 7-3-0-0-0, a seven-high low. The pair of sevens is avoided by using only one seven.

B's best hand is 9-6-4-2-A, a nine-high low. Player A wins, because seven-high beats nine-high.

Example

A zero beats an ace

Player A's best hand is 6♣5♦3♥2♠K♣, which counts as 6-5-3-2-0. Player B's best hand is 6♦5♠3♣2♥A♦, which counts as 6-5-3-2-1.

The hands are equal until the last card, where A's king (zero) is lower than B's ace. Player A wins.

Article 5Variations and strategy notes

5.1

The same zero rule for picture cards may be added to other lowball games. It is offered as a variation of Riding Ramone, for example.

Strategy notes:

  • Picture cards are the best cards to catch, so a king showing on the board is a strong start, not a weak one.
  • Because picture cards never pair, there are twelve zero cards in the deck, and hands of three or four zeros are common.
  • A made low with one high number card can still lose to a hand holding more zeros and a lower top card.

Article 6Frequently asked questions

What is the best hand in More or Less?

Any five picture cards (kings, queens and jacks). Each counts as zero and they never pair, so five of them make the lowest possible hand, 0-0-0-0-0.

Do two kings make a pair in More or Less?

No. Kings, queens and jacks all count as zero and do not pair, so two kings are just two zeros.

Does a zero beat an ace in More or Less?

Yes. An ace counts as one, and a picture card counts as zero, so a picture card is the lower card.
