Suicide Swiss Hold'em Rules

Suicide Swiss Hold'em is Swiss Hold'em with one wild card, the king of hearts. As in Swiss Hold'em, players may pay a rising fee to swap both hole cards on their turn. If the king of hearts is in a player's hole cards only that player can use it; if it appears on the board, every player may use it.

Article 1Players, deck and wild card

1.1

Suicide Swiss Hold'em is a variation of Swiss Hold'em, a game contributed by Xavier Petit and published on pagat.com. It follows all the rules of Swiss Hold'em except where this page states otherwise.

1.2

Between two and ten players may take part, using a standard 52-card deck with no jokers.

1.3

The king of hearts, sometimes called the suicide king, is a wild card. It may stand for any card its user chooses.

1.4

Hands rank according to the standard poker hand rankings. Because there is a wild card, five of a kind is possible (four natural cards of one rank plus the king of hearts). Sources do not rank it; the usual practice is that five of a kind beats a straight flush, and the dealer shall announce the ranking before the deal.

Article 2Blinds, the deal and betting

2.1

The blinds, the deal of two hole cards each, the flop, turn and river, and the four betting rounds are the same as in Texas Hold'em.

2.2

On their turn, a player may exchange both hole cards for two new ones, as in Swiss Hold'em. The first exchange of the hand costs one big blind, and each later exchange costs one big blind more than the one before. Fees go into the pot and are not bets.

2.3

After exchanging, the player takes their normal turn or exchanges again. A player shall always exchange both cards together.

2.4

A player who holds the king of hearts and exchanges discards it with their other hole card. It is then out of play for the rest of the hand.

Article 3Using the wild card

3.1

If the king of hearts is one of a player's hole cards, only that player may use it.

3.2

If the king of hearts is one of the community cards, every player may use it, each choosing whatever card best completes their own hand.

3.3

Each player makes the best five-card hand from their two hole cards and the five community cards. The best high hand wins; tied hands split the pot.

Example

The wild king in the hole

Board: 8♦8♠4♥2♣J♦

Player A holds K♥8♣. The king of hearts stands for the last eight, giving four eights with a jack kicker.

Player B holds J♥J♠ for a full house, jacks full of eights. Player A's four of a kind wins.

Example

The wild king on the board

Board: K♥9♠7♠6♦2♣

Player A holds 10♠8♣. A already has the straight T-9-8-7-6, but using the king of hearts as a jack improves it to J-T-9-8-7.

Player B holds A♠3♠. With the 9 and 7 of spades on the board, B has four spades. Using the king of hearts as the king of spades, B makes an ace-high flush, A-K-9-7-3. The flush beats the straight, so Player B wins.

Article 4Variations and notes

  • Without the wild card, the game is plain Swiss Hold'em.
  • Because a wild card in the hole is so strong, a player who has not seen it may be more willing to pay for an exchange in the hope of drawing it. Every exchange also puts two more cards out of play, and the king of hearts may be among them.
  • Groups that play other wild-card Hold'em games should agree before the deal whether five of a kind is ranked above a straight flush.
